It's actually used in my line of work in front of Japanese and they couldn't care any less. The connotations of the slur live on w/ the older Japanese crowd but most in my line of work are younger and take the word for what it is, short for Japanese.

mrgrn....you must be american!?
I find americans find the word 'jap' offensive, we here in Australia don't, infact all my japanese friends(I have many) are not offended by it either.....so I will continue to use the word Jap.
If you want to talk about being offended just have a look at what red neck americans constantly do around the world....now I find that offensive!

Taking the word for what it is then "Jap" is indeed a racial slur born in the
heat of combat... JPN is the accepted short for the Island of Japan...
Quote Wikipedia"
"Jap is a pejorative term used to refer to Japanese people. It is
considered a racial slur in most contexts."
"In Japanese dictionaries, the term Jap is only defined as a
disparaging term used against the Japanese people, like it is the case
in many English language dictionaries. In the United States and
Canada, the term is considered derogatory. In Britain it is considered
derogatory and is falling into disuse, and the Oxford dictionary
defines it as offensive."
You will find that the word "Jap" is no longer used in the motorcycle media and certainly not in the main stream
media... and if you value your job then I would follow their lead...

Correct me if I am wrong, if the RC45 is so great why did they go to the RC51? Also if V4's work so much better than inline 4's why do they make more inline 4's? I just can't seem to understand the thought process, I mean Honda has what just about every mag says is the orgasmic experience on two wheels (for the blind) then why is it crap in AMA?

1) The deciding factor for Honda going with a V2 over the V4 was cost...
2) More I4s are made because they are cheaper to produce than a V4...
3) Riders claim that I4s are orgasmic that is until a race bred V4 shows up and redefines the term...
Here is an 2002 Bike magazine article that explored the same question on
the V4... What is it about that V4 engine layout that makes it so good? And
why aren't we all riding them?

Thanks for proving my point. Most of the people who use the word now are younger and couldn't care any less about the war/negative connotations. It's a US thing, and the negativity of the word doesn't really ruffle any feathers outside of the US. I'll use the word as I see fit, and people will just have to cope if they want to believe it means anything other than a shortened form of "Japanese".

HYSTERICAL! I didn't realize you were an older Japanese guy who lived through the war. I can see why it's affecting you and not the 1000's of Japanese that I work with each day. I'll let them know they're wrong Smokey.

I offered proof that world does care about "Jap" being a racial slur and no
amount of good intentions by the young Japanese can erase the negative war
time connotations... they would not use the term in front of their parents
because there is no joy in making people cope with their pass... you should
see fit to only use Japanese too... it won't kill you...

Probably not, but why risk it? People can cope with whatever word I choose. If they take it wrong, that's THEIR problem, not mine Sonny.

Jap is mildly perjorative, about the same as Gerry for Germans, Pollock for Polish, or Jew for Jewish. I think any can be said somewhat innocently, or hatefully depending on the person using it. Probably best to expunge all from your vocabulary lest you offend someone without meaning to do so.
However, none are nearly the same level of offense (IMO) as Chinky, Porch Monkey, Butt Pirate, or Sand N*****.

OMFG, 60 years ago? HYSTERICAL! U really are caught in a timewarp? At first I thought your obsession with the fossil RC45 was just part of being you, but now you're digging up stuff form the 60's and projecting it to the current age. It's 2008 bro, u missed 60 years of reality along the way.

Equating a shortened version of a word that even the Japanese don't find all the offensive to a FELONIOUS CRIME? Truly some of your best work (carbon included).

-or try Lalapalooza on them! That's a panic!
That's the first useful thing I've read in this entire thread.
