So fill us in. For those of us who were born after WII and the inception of this technology... WTF is inside the tubes between the crank case and the heads? The 4 distinct shiny tubes? Pushrods for actuating valves? Whassup?

I am so glad that I've had the priveledge of knowing and working on this nice simple old iron as well as the new stuff.
Spend just a little time trying to even see parts on a new bike and it sure makes you appreciate the old stuff. So easy to work on and contrary to what people think, does not take that much work. And I sure miss a kick starter. There is a great source of pride in owning an old bike with kick only and having that bike is such a good state of tune that it will start first or second kick every time.

Hate to admit it but there is some magic to old harleys. My first bike was a 48 panhead chop that I built from scrounged parts when I was 17. Man was I a terror.
Rode it through the door and down the long hallway and out the other side of high school with the help of two 'doormen' sans mufflers one afternoon on a 'sick' day. Just to piss off the principal who was a dick. He knew who it was........
As I sold it umpteen thousand years ago because it was a spine breaking POS I can still identify the sound of a panhead when one trundles down the road. Another memorable thing was actually the smell. Dunno why, but as these dinosaurs used oil the smell was unique.
I have a buddy with a 70's vintage shovelhead chopper and ride it once every 4 years. The magic suddenly disappears. Yup, still a POS. No brakes, no lean no steer. Gimme my modern stuff.
ps: Nice Linkert and Fairbanks Morse.

I've always like the looks of the knuckle or the shovel. Maybe we should have a group buy on choppers or bobbers?

great story
As he and his boys are guzzling beer and dancing with some of the ladies in the bar, one female dance partner questions Johnny:
Hey, Johnny, What are you rebelling against?
While tapping out a jazzy beat on the top of the jukebox, he raises his eyebrow and drawls his amorphous reason for rebellion:
What've you got?
