How far can you 2 go , how about not! & use your energy (yea & I'm guilty of such long arguing myself) to start a wave of communication on the original topic, & e-mail & send messages that the Dakar logistics is just not going to work & a change of venue (not perfect but like my idea of Australia) is in order.
Yes the Dakar Rally in it's name within itself is historical & a tradition, but let it slide into history on a good note & move on !
It's not giving in to terrorist either, because if you still make like the same rally somewhere else, it's still continuing.
I would love to See the effort that went into the Dakar Rally put into a just as difficult but in a Terrorist free & culturally acceptable venu.

Back to the topic.....
By the way Manic and XFBO you guys rock......
If the Best Country in the world were to cancel big events due the threats received (Super Bowl, New Year's @ Time's Square, etc) we would be the laughing stock of radical Muslims everywhere. Instead, we carry on slaying these scumbags in desert shitholes overseas and let pathetic war-fighting countries, i.e. France, Spain, etc., cower under threats. As they have for the past 100 years.
Who do you think the bad guys want in office? George W is not perfect, but there has not been another attack on our soil since 9/11.
Imagine if Gore was President?? I would be typing this in Arabic.....
Dakar cancelled is a victory for the shitbags....

While I don't think ANYWHERE is safe from Muslim crack-heads, I see your point and will call your bluff. I really have no idea on who to contact to express my dismay, but if you can give me some leads to email or people to harass, I will gladly do so. I think it is horrible that an organization cancels an event because they are frankly a bunch of pussies. The contestants were ready, made all their plans, and many even showed up. They weren't scared, but the people that organize the event folded like bad poker hand.

pluming the depths
of ignorance and stupidity is a near impossibility I'm going to give it another shot.
In the American war of independence the term terrorist had not yet been coined but that didn't stop the English from treating the colonists as if they were terrorists. Kill them rather than give in to some pretty tame demands. Something about taxation without representation.
Seems like a compromise could have been found but the powers that be couldn't or wouldn't see it. War was the answer then and to the small minded war is the answer now.Lets skip ahead a few years ,the Taliban had just defeated Russia in Afganistan .Ronald Reagen had the Taliban leaders to the white house and called them "the greatest freedom fighters since the minute men" . Times change, yesterday's freedom fighter becomes tomorrows terrorist or as in the case of American revolution the reverse becomes true.
What has GB done with his time in the white house ...well lets see he did attacked a third world country which up until that time had no connection with 9/11 on the flimsy pretext that they had or would have or possibly could get weapons of mass destruction .Almost the act of a dare I say a terrorist. If not a terrorist then bully might be more fitting . The result is what we are witness to today . A small band of disaffected Saudi nationals now has wide spread influence in the muslim world .
Yes the world does watch with great anticipation what the American voter will decide. Hoping that great power will be accompanied by great responsibility.

The French DGSE had inside information that there was a strong probability of the now revitalised (thank you, neocons) salafist Group for Praying and Combat (now carrying the "Al Qaeda in Mahgreb" moniker, due to the street-cred given it by "Tah-dah !!" GWB and the neocons..) had plans to drive a truck laden with explosives into the bivouac.
For these morons, this represents a "great victory" if they pull it off, 51 nations are present, 160 journalists, and loads of direct-access satelite cameras to beam the news out immediately, full of gory and shocking images. Great (sic) propaganda.
If the DGSE think there is a strong risk of this happening, then it's highly likely. This is the spy agency that warned Bush and the neocons 8 months before 9/11 that something was up, and as for all the turgid head-in-mud rah-rah muppets who think that Europe has "capitulated" to "terra", when was the last time we were attacked ? (Sorry, punk kids rioting and burning cars is NOT "terra".... )
We just do things in a far more subtle way. A silenced pistol and a vanished financer or radical preacher is often more effective than a cruise missile. Maybe that's over some of your heads ?
If you want to express your anger at how "Evil terrorists" have won, you can send an e-mail to Etienne Lavigne, organiser of the rally.
Euromilhões Lisboa Dakar 2008*: page d’accueil
Try to think before you write and send it, and using phrases like "cheese-eating surrender-monkey's" will only make you look more ignorant than a lump of camel dung.
Try to understand the logistical side of the rally, and despite the very close surveillance by the Mauritanian army and elements of the FL, it's impossible to secure fully a rally of this size. There is a lot of desert out there !
They could have run a lighter parcourse, a shorter rally, maybe with an airlift over some of the REALLY hot spots, but reorganising all the fuel dumps and already-in-place checkpoints the day before the rally was to start was next to impossible.
Since the "War to create terror" started, it's been on the cards that the Dakar would possibly become a target, and due to the reinforcement of extremist Islam due to the idiocy in the Gulf, today it's become a reality.
The political reasons for the rally being cancelled at such short notice are also clear. By leaving it to the last minute, the Western governments have a big baton to beat the countries and local populations over their heads with, berating the citizens for their possible support, or at least indifference to the "terrorists" for the enormous economic losses and damaged image inflicted on their countries. A man who has lost a small fortune due to the action of some ideologically blinded fanatics is more likely to drop a note in the letterbox of the local police post denouncing some of the supporters of the morons who caused him and his family to eat bugs due to the rally being cancelled by said fanatics.
It's more subtle than just sending in tanks and helicopter gunships to protect the rally, and keeping the African spectators away by force of arms would only reinforce the "terrorists" standing as "freedom fighters".
No, I feel deeply sad for my friends and the other competitors who eat, sleep and breath this amazing event, but I think it was the only real solution. Maybe it will get some real action, now, to address crucial issues, because it would be a shame if the rally was to die.
There are plenty of alternatives, though.
South Africa has tabled a pretty interesting rally, and Portugal have a contract signed for the depart in 2009, so Tunisia, Libya (now that Moammar is a chum of the West) and the rally ending in Cairo is the favored route possibility.
That's a shame, in a way, because the run along the "Lac Rose" (Pink lake) at the end of the Dakar, after the slog and grind of the dunes, was one of the beautiful images of the Dakar............

This thread needs to move from "Street and Track".....
Whoever wrote this is about as educated as my big toe. To compare American "colonists" to: suicidal, no respect for innocent life, Muslim Turds who slaughtered 3000+ CIVILIANS for the deranged thinking that they are going to get a bunch of virgins in paradise, is idiotic.
The Taliban did not exist until after the Muhijadeen defeated the Russians. That defeat happened with the support of the U.S., no other reason.
Dude, I have been to both shitholes, numerous times and think these people (Radical Muslims) are the scum of the earth.
Iraq needed to be crushed. That country was lead by a turd that posed a great threat to the U.S. I know it does not go over well with the Liberals back in the states drinking lattes, reading the New York Post, and complaining about gas prices. The same people who will say the U.S. did not do enough when another attack happens in America. It is only a matter of time...
It does suck that thousands of America's best have been killed, but it was for a great cause, and they volunteered to defend this country. You cannot negotiate with these people/animals. They can only be dealt wth one way. Doing it 7000 miles away is better than doing it in your own backyard.
Like I said earlier, who do you think the terrorists' want in the White House?
Lets get back to Street and Track......

Jaymags, it's a crying shame that you went through the Middle East with your eyes shut, seeing only what your programming told you to see and ignoring the rest.
Suicide Bombers in Islam
This is a good round up. Know your "enemy", as it were, because you don't seem to have a very clear view here....

I'm sure you met some of these black-turbaned pricks. Where did they come from, I wonder ?
Ever read any Bob Baer ?

I think Rudy or Huck would be rapturously greeted by the fanatical nutcases. Bush was great for them, afterall. 300 % more fanatics than before the neocons. Mission accomplished.

Le Kiwi,
I don't know where you reside, but my guess is not the USA. Maybe you do and are one of those ultra left wing people but the USA is NOT responsible for the popular rise in terrorism...no matter what these US hating web sites tell you.
These people have been the bain of civilization since the beginning of recorded history. They have no tolerance for anything other than the brain washing they have been taught no matter where on this planet their "enemy" resides. The US has been getting a lot of press for the past 20 years, but we are merely another target in their operation. Until you people actually open your eyes and understand this is a much greater problem than a bit of Anti-American behavior, none of this will get better.
Are suicide attacks growing in popularity? Sure they are...they get press, they accomplish their mission, they scare people and make people across the entire world cave in to their demands. It is the fearful that gives power to those people. When you think of it, it is a great strategy to win a fight. Throw in some bullshit about being rewarded in the afterlife, start teaching your hate at an early age, have no value on human life because you base your entire mode of thought on writings from THOUSANDS of years ago. You can't really lose can you?
Yes, unfortunately, I am of the evil mindset that to win a fight (and that is exactly what this is) you have to stoop to the level of the enemy. There is no honor in war in my opinion. Once you have actually had to do something as horrible as go to war with another person, it is kill or be killed. I believe that if we as a country has to resort to actual WAR with someone else, we should bring the full might with everything we've got to strike fear into those who terrorize us.

I believe what I see....not what I read I don't sit back, armchair quarterback and read articles. We leave that to the left wing. The world lets America, England, Israel, and Australia deal with defending what is right.

I live in France, but I've lived in the USA, and no, I'm not an "Ultra-left wing person", but I do have some problem with equating the massive boost in Islamic extremist terrorism which was dying out and being run into the ground before 2000 to the "unresponsability" of the neocon-run USA's actions of "Operation Bull-in-China-shop" and operation "Loot all the oil while you're there" since 2001.

Sorry, recorded history starts over 7000 years ago, amongst the ziggarats of Sumeria and Mesapotamia, coincidently where your men and women are struggling and dying for the oil barons profits right this instant. Read some of those links, especially the one from the Israeli's, because they understand the beast, even if they seem powerless due to the idiots in charge to stop the phenomenon.
You could do with reading Bob Baer's book "See no evil".
Nothing will get better while you still have morons leading you and incompetents deciding foreign policy which better suits their and their cronies pocketbooks than the greater interest of the American people...

I agree totally with you here. I'm an old Sun Tzu kinda guy, myself. But, and it's a big BUT, you had better make sure that the fight is the good fight and not some thinly disguised "get rich quicker" scheme or oil heist for a small bunch of suckers who have hijacked America and are taking you all to the cleaners, and some of you to the undertakers.
I think you've been totally suckered, rolled in the dough to find the damp spot, and skewered.
If you're happy like that, well, there's not a lot I can say to convince you to wake up and smell the gold finger.

Actually, I kind of agree with you, but I still hope you are well-informed enough to understand who is currently dictating your foreign policy, and who is profiting from it, because fighting and dying for the glorious nobility of Freedom and Democracy is a grand thing, fighting and dying because some sly shits have decided that you're just dumb enough to be used as cannon-fodder for their "get-rich-quick" schemes, well, I'd be a bit concerned about that. Did you know that Dick Cheney's shares in Halliburton have increased over 3000 % since you went in to "liberate' the Iraqi peopoil ?

That's the tip of the iceberg that the USS Titanic is steaming directly into. You have been taken as mugs, used as tools and are being tossed aside once you're broken. Maybe you don't care, but I do. I guess Walter Reed was just "routine" for you and your comrades in arms ?
I know what is "right and Just", and have no problem with defending that with blood if neccessary, but I don't like being taken for a rube, or a ride, like you have. Over.

Dakar
Wow - what a screwfest.
In 1997, after finishing Top American on a "B" factory KTM at the FIM Optic 2000 Rallye of Tunisia, I rec'd. an invitation from the promotors to race the Dakar Rallye. Too bad I didn't do it, as it looks like the thing has been wrecked by Al Queda. Then again, it seemed like such torture (and the $45,000 estimated budget!) that I still remain glad I didn't do it. However, I'd rather have the opportunity to, instead of having it removed due to politics.
