I know that these pictures were supposedly on the Honda site for a few hours then taken down, but I have to wonder about their authenticity. The front end is just unbelievable and the fairing is truly nasty.

I guess the original R/W/B 900RR (or maybe the Blackbird) remains as the best looking Honda open classer ever.

Well, I've seen it, and sat on it in person, and it is indeed all that. Small, refined, compact and very Honda. It is VERY light. It's stubby and short with kind of a blunt front end. They did well. Very well. You'll see. It will be liked. The last time I saw a bike like this from honda, it was the unveiling of the CBR900RR.

All of the mags have owned the 1098 thus far. I haven't yet ridden a 1098 but from what I've read:

1 - 999 more stable than 1098
2 - 1098 lighter than 999
3 - 1098 more power than 999
4 - 999 has better feel from the front
5 - 999 inspires more confidence
6 - 1098 flicks faster than 999 but doesn't necessarily equate to faster laps.
7 - 1098 stalling issue


In my opinion, a 999S can be had on the cheap now, and with a high compression piston kit, full system, PCIII/Custom map, cam degree, crank lightening/balance you will make the same horsepower (140 at the wheel) for around the same money as a 1098 new out the door. Or you can just buy an '05/06R for around $20K. At the current level I think it's a matter of picking your poison.

Now the 1198R will probably be a clear step up from the 999R. By that point, it ought too with a 200cc advantage.

You nailed it aces, I've been waiting for this machine for over a decade, to me it represents the first total commitment to racing in a street production literbike with an inline 4 configuration from big red.
The CBR has always been a streetbike first and racebike second, they shed that philosopy with their 600 this year and look at the results, the world championship already bagged and god knows how many national titles.
If the 1k can capture the same magic as it's little brother, and I have no reason to believe it wont, it will be a very sick ride, and instantly competitive with the zook even in superstock spec.

This Honda is pretty ugly. The 999 is uglier. Why do you thing Ducati couldn't sell the bike in the numbers it did the 916 - 998 series? Hence the production of the 1098......
