Damn, the more I know about Chaz Davies, the more I am awed.....
Erion Honda's Josh Hayes won the Formula Xtreme race by 5.474, and he led from start to finish. Sounds like a boring race, doesn't it? Well, it was not. It was most decidedly not boring.
Attack Kawasaki's Ben Attard held onto second place, and his position looked secure until the last few laps of the race. Celtic Racing's Chaz Davies rode like an Irishman possessed and almost pipped Australian Attard at the finish line. Davies was riding his Supersport bike...in Formula Xtreme. He blew up his FX engine on Friday and had no choice but to thrash his Supersport Yamaha YZF-R6. 17-inch wheels. DOT tires. Stock suspension. More like the middleweight sportbike you ride on the street than any other FX bike on the track.
In the latter stages of the race, Davies passed Larry Pegram on his Ducati 748R and Steve Rapp on his Attack Kawasaki ZX-6R. When all was said and done, Davies had a best lap of just 3/10 of a second slower than Josh Hayes on his high-zoot CBR600RR. Josh Hayes--the guy with the big number 1 on his fairing.

I'm not entirely up to speed on the rules in supersport, but are the suspensions really stock? How much are they allowed to modify the suspension?
Chaz should have a damn good ride next year.
As far as the suspension I think they can use different cartridges(ak20's or ohlins cartriges) in the forks for they must appear to be "stock" so you can't put dlc coating on the fork legs, can't use ohlins forks, etc, etc

Well, I dont think completely stock is an accurate description of what they run in SS but it aint no full blown factory Ohlins either like the FX bikes have.
IIRC, SS bikes can have their fork internals modified (ie. revalved, new shim stack, etc....) or better yet [and getting much more popular] they're dropping in 25MM cart kits from either Ohlins or the many aftermarket company's out there who offer them (ie. Traxxion, GP Suspension, etc....). As for the rear, they can run whatever they want but they cant modify the swingarm or make any geometry changes that arent stock.
Funny story (sort of), ever since Mosport last yr, Im a huge fan of Celtic Racings youngest rider Patrick Jacobson. The kid is an unbelievable rider/racer, only 14 this yr and I truly believe this kid is heading to the top in the near future. Anyhow at the NYC show last yr, I walked right past Chaz to get lil PJ's autograph! LOL! I had never heard of Chaz Davies!!!
When I saw this kid [Chaz] giving the big boys hell at Daytona I knew CR had another special racer on board, kudos to them for scouting some real talent!!! I suspect if Davies keeps shining the way he has he wont be on CR's team much longer.

Yeah, stock suspension. Was that from Dean Adams? He kind of puts things that way, and I'm assuming it was Dean Adams.
Most of the paddock is running replacement cartridges. They are commonly available from Ohlins at around $1800. Penske has some also, if you know someone. I think they are around $2200. Showa also makes them, but that's a manufacturer level support program. Yeah, the Traxxion AK20's are an inexpensive option, but I don't know if they offer the same level of performance as the others. Additionally, some of those, at a higher cost, are available as gas charged cartridges.
A fair racing shock starts at around $1000 and goes up.

I was gonna ask if anyone's ever heard from someone running Traxxions AK-Gas carts?!?!? The concept sounds awesome but at $2500/set I dunnooooooo!
Im hoping to drop Thermosman a call this week and get his recommendation for my bike. As crazy as it sounds, if I had heard enough positive feedback about those AK-Gas carts and they really just drop in, in about any set of forks I would give it some serious thought.
Just think about what you're getting for $2500, a 1 time investment in a front end that can be taken with you from bike to bike...........unless you bin it ofcourse.

At club races, a ton of guys have the Ohlins cartridges. Yeah, they are almost $2000, and at that cost, they should get those people going two seconds a lap faster all the time...and sexual favors, for that matter.
I don't see that happening.
Even my crummy cartridges in my SV1000 are pretty good, and they are really cheap units.

Good call. We have run Mike's suspensions in all of our bikes for the last six years. We currently have two bikes - one with the 25 mil kit and one with the 20 mil kit. Thermosman is the king of suspension gurus. None better in this country.
BTW, he kind of shares property with Britt Lynn....racedad on here.....and two doors down from Brian Drebber, v4dreb on here.
Fun place to hang out.

Why would a Welshman ride like an Irishman possessed?
