Default Speed Limit is 55mph, give or take a hundred

Motorcyclist Clocked at 155 Mph Jailed

Mon Mar 13, 5:37 PM ET

LIVINGSTON, La. - A motorcyclist has been given a couple of days to think about the record he set — at least in the minds of state troopers.

Brian Samuel Willis, 20, was clocked zooming down Interstate 12 on Sunday at 155 miles per hour — more than two times the speed limit 70, state police said.
"That may be the fastest of all-time in the state," said Trooper Ryan Riley of Troop A. "I can't confirm it, but I don't think anyone has ever gotten anybody at 155. The fastest I know of is like 144."

Riley said he was traveling westbound about 6 p.m. when he got the motorcycle in his radar. Maneuvering his vehicle to the other side of the interstate, Riley tried to follow Willis, but the black Yamaha R6 ducked off the roadway onto state highway 441 and traveled south to state highway 42, Riley said.

At that point, Livingston Parish sheriff's deputies and Springfield police chased Willis back toward Riley, who made the arrest, he said.

"He pulled over once he saw all of us, without incident," Riley said. "He just said he didn't think he was going that fast and he didn't know we were behind him. He thought he was only doing 120 or 130."

Willis motorcycle was impounded and he was booked for reckless operation of a vehicle, flight from an officer and speeding, Riley said.

"The judge refused to set the bond until Tuesday," Riley said. "I think she is going to let him spend a few days in jail."

He could use the redline issue in a confusion defense. "Well yer Honor, I hit I-55 @ 17,500 then tried to do the math to reduce it to 15.5 but then I saw 155 so I pulled over right away to make sure and...there were the peace officers" !

Good thing he wasn't in Minnesota, he would have been clocked at 230mph.

I have serious reservations about the validity of this. I have owned six R6's (I have the record as far as I know) and the speedos are so stupidly off it is a complete joke. The fastest I have ever been on the street (interstate and some way out back roads) is an indicated 157 and that was totally maxed out....but the speedo is so far off that the real speed was like 135, I am guessing. I would like to see a real bonafide certified laser gun indicating anything over 140 on an R6.....I truly do NOT think that a stock R6 will do 140 in REAL speed. I sure don't think that my new '06 will do 155 for real unless it is down a very steep grade with a major tailwind.

So...I am quite puzzled as to this guy's ability to go a full 15-20 mph over the bike's REAL top end.

He might have changed the gearing to get a better top speed.

I would certainly tell my lawyer to ask for proof the laser/radar had been recently calibrated!

Would it REALLY matter if it turned out to be 138 instead of 155 ?

If they can prove the 155 is wrong, they have nothing else to determine the speed and they may end up throwing it out. I'm not a lawyer, but it makes sense.

Not here man. I live right down the road from where this happened. You forget, Louisiana is one of THE MOST corrupt places in this country. My buddy was called to bail him out (bailbondsman). He has more than just one violation. There is the whole running from the cops thing. He was just being dumb.

Ditto here. My 2003 R1 was off 14%. Seems like some manufacturers pad the speedo for whatever reason... Regardless 130 - 155 is flying on public roads.

OK, I think we can all agree. 100+ at 6pm is too fast for the traffic. But if he can beat the sppeding charge, that's 1 out of three. better then facing all 3 charges.
