Default Beginner question - handlebar weights

I was recently given a 86 Yamaha Radian that needs some work. I am a beginner but learning quickly.

My question is this. I replaced the old, slightly bent handlebars and replaced them with a universal set. When I got them off some weights came out of the old set. I have not put them in the new ones because I wasn't sure why they were there in the first place.

Could someone let me know why they are in there. Should I put them in my new handlebars? Any help is appreciated.

Brian

The "weights" (or bar ends on some bikes) actually dampen vibration in the handlebars. On some bikes, the vibration will put your hands to sleep without them....
