Default Oil Change - 1st time with Synth.

04' RC with 6K miles (hard miles) did only the oil change - didn't change the filter. First time I added the Synthetic oil -4 qrts.

Noticed yesterday, the bike was feeling a little sluggish. That's when I noticed the bike had too much oil - drained it to the correct amount. BTW No smoke or anything of that sort. But I can still feel the bike a little sluggish especially around 4-5K rpm.

yea for real....you even stated " hard miles " hope you changed it arround 500, 1500, 3000, 5500, and why the heck are you not changing oil filters?

you bought a $10K bike and cant spend $8 an oem filter to keep it clean?

check your air filters as stated above...but unless your in a dirty air area or taking the RC off road you should be fine.

tighten your battery cables, check your plugs

pull out your Nomex suit

You need to do the flapper mod.

Flapper Mod DONE (one of the first mods I did a long time ago), first oil change at 600 miles another oil change @ 3,500 miles. I do have the new oil filter, just didn't have the right tools at that time to loosen that ish up.

I was told to check the air box and spark plugs...

Doin' a tune up tomorrow - might as well...

thanks

Yeah and if that won't work, I just use a flat screwdriver and a hammer to turn it just enough to knock it loose.

You're an idiot. Nice work mixing synthetic and organic oil. Never pick up a wrench again.

4 qrts with no filter change??????
4.1 qrts with filter change.
Don't have my manual beside me but I know 4 qrts is too much oil with out filter change plus why waste the time to change the oil with out the filter?
I got my oil filter wrench at walmart for $2.75 works like a champ

You shouldn't stop working on your bike, just find a friend that has good mechanical sense and tools if your lucky. Its cheaper to learn than it is to pay the dealership. Use this incident as a learning experience to read the manual, doudle check it and make sure the poper tools and parts are on hand before you start. There are plenty of people on this forum in CA and alot of them will bend over backwards to help out, especially if it comes to wrenching on a RC.

Seriously, I would look for a reputable shop in your area to do everything.

OT- If it was a 6 month tour to be an MTI, I'd be on my way to San Antonio, but I definitely don't want to spend 3 years there.

Hey V-Twin,that's pretty harsh.Weren't you the one telling people to not buy a speedo recalibrater because it ruins your gas milage? Now that was funny it was so idiotic!
I think most people agree,it is more important to change the filter than the oil if you were only to do one of 'em.

First of all, the flapper has NOTHING to do with the huge dip in power from 4-5k. The flapper has to do with the little tiny dip around 5.5k, since this is when it closes.

The 4-5k dip is a result of the stock slip ons and is remedied by a high quality aftermarket set.

Secondly, it is much better to change the oil INSTEAD of the filter (if only choosing one) since -

a) the oil tends to break down with use and frankly just gets dirty, and

b) a dirty filter actually cleans BETTER than a brand new filter. Ex: an engine will loose performance with a dirty air filter because the filter is filtering too well.

Thank you.

I'm just goin' by what some engineer's/chemist's said who worked for Humble/Enjay Oil in Houston TX.
Their job's are to develop these oil's and filters but maybe you know better.

Perhaps, but consider this:

(if my memory serves me....) The RC51's owners' manual has us changing the oil and NOT the filter for the first 300mi change.

I would presume that this is because the filter simply does not need changing so soon while the oil has been contaminated with assembly lube and various pieces of engine that the filter simply cannot deal with.

In fact i also remember that the next oil change does not come utnil something like 4k or so. Hmmmm........ so much for extended break-in periods.

Commence Flaming!!!!!!!!

Damn dude!!!! Your RC is laying in the back of a truck on its side. That might explain your sluggish power delivery?
