Default push starting an RC51

I attempted to push start my bike this weekend since it wouldn't start due to (i hope) a dead battery, but I couldn't get it to work.

Turned the ignition on, pushed the kill switch to on position, pulled the clutch in and put it in first gear. I had my friend push my bike with me in the seat until the bike went about 5-8 mph. I let the clutch out and all it did was lock up the rear wheel.

On my old F4i it would start after letting the clutch out. Am I doing something wrong?

Not sure on the RC but I did have to do it a few times on my F4i, I always used 2nd gear to start the bike and it worked like a charm.

First gear will be way to difficult specially with a twin. Try second or even third gear.

I had the same problem. Give up and go buy some jump cables! High compression and two big pistons. Aint gonna happen. That's why the guys who race twins use rollers to start their bikes. Its the same in the pit lane on MotoGP bikes.

If you're gonna buy anything, buy one of those portable rechargeable battery jump starters. I bought one for $30 and it's awesome. Be sure to pull off one of the clamps as soon as the bike kicks over

do you have a link to the portable charger you are talking about? sounds like it may come in handy in the future.

Actually if you buy anything you should buy a new battery.

These things are great! I have this one: http://www.autopn.com/store/pc...22472

I think I picked it up at Pep boys for $30. You can find them at any auto parts store. Very nice if you have bikes that sit in the garage for extended periods, as I sometimes do

The Battery Tender is great, if you can wait a few hours for it to charge your battery. If you need some juice NOW though, these portable jumpers do the trick. They work for your cars too! Mine also has two 12V adapters that you can plug stuff into, and a flourescent light in the handle

Coleman Brand Compact Jump Starter

Recommended for 4 cylinder vehicles

10 amp/hour maintenance-free battery
500 peak amps/250 cold cranking amps
Reverse polarity indicator light and alarm for added protection
Booster cable ON/OFF switch for added safety
Built-in fluorescent worklight
Dual 12-volt power ports for operating 12-volt accessories
LED battery level indicator lights to signal when recharging is needed
AC and DC charging adaptors included

You should maybe sell it and stick with something simpler. Such as:

You really shoudn't jump start your bike if you have the option. reason 1 being that it has a small sealed battery. and reason 2 being that its bad to jump start any fuel injected vehicle.

Ok, I'll bite. Why would a vehicle being fuel injected create any kind of issue when jump starting a vehicle (provided you do it properly)?

Voltage spikes from jumping older closed loop ecu's caused catastrophic failures, now it just pops the fuse. I do know of a PC111r that lost its map after a jump start.

I have bump started my RC in 3rd gear several times

I might get flamed for this but if your battery doesnt power up the fuel pump can you still bump start it? Never tried to bump start a fuel injected bike.

I'll go easy on you If you look one post up, you'll see this:
<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by sp2pilot &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">I have bump started my RC in 3rd gear several times</TD></TR></TABLE> and the 2nd post in the thread:

so, I would have to say, Yes, you can bump start a fuel injected bike.

thanks. good to know that it's possible and that someone has successfully done it on this bike.

That's what happened to my map!!!! When I bought my 51 the guy let the battery go dead, he jumped it off his truck the day I picked it up. I took it home and it ran like shit so Superbike2001 stopped by and hooked a laptop up to it....NO MAP. I called the guy and asked what map he was running he said DK Sato high. Well there was nothing we re-loaded the Dk map and she has purred ever since. I though it was from the dead battery but thought the PC would hold memory, never thought about the jump.

the PC will hold a map even with a dead battery. I program PC's and send them to people all the time. So does Dan Kyle

As far as bump starting a Fuel Injected bike with a totally dead battery, ain't gonna happen

You will need enough amperage in your battery to prime up. ( fuel injection pump will have to achieve full pressure)

Bike that does not have enough amperage in the battery to crank will normally have enough to fire the fuel injection system.

Hmmm, pretty sure my bike lost it's map this weekend(PC#3R)when I lfeft the lights on and tried to start it. The bike wouldn't even crank over and now it's running extremely lean-my dilemma here http://speedzilla.zeroforum.co...44170

Not saying you're wrong SP2, maybe since I tried to crank the bike with the battery so low??? The whole dash went blank when I tried to start it. Maybe a jolt to the pc like this would erase it?
