Default CBR Radial Master feeling spongy???

Hello all. From the get-go, my used master from an '08 1000RR has always felt spongy. The adjustment is on #1 and I can still seem to almost pull the lever in to the point where I hit my knuckles. What gives?

I have:
  • Flushed and bled the master and calipers with new Motul fluid
  • Installed Galfer lines and pads
  • Discovered NO leaks
  • the '08 radial billet calipers as well.
Does anyone else have this problem? Thanks for your time.

That's exactly the same problem I had with my OE master cylinder on the SP2: it felt spongy from the moment I picked up the bike from my mate in Rome and no amount of bleeding or tinkering (including changing two brake levers) could solve the problem. I was about to take it apart to fully service it when I saw a nice Brembo radial master cylinder with a nice rebate at a local store and that settled the matter...

Thanks for the input fellas. I recently felt another '08 CBR and it too felt spongy, to me. Is this an inherent characteristic of the radial masters off the new Honda bikes? Or am I just bad at determining "feel"?

They all seem to be that way, I know my 08 1000 is.

The best stock master I have felt is the Brembo units that come on R1/R6's.

I had the excessive lever travel problem with my OEM 2002 RC51 master cyclinder, and a 2005 CBR1000RR cylinder fixed it right up.

The RC master is not a radial unit like the RR's so you will gain some additional firmness with that upgrade.

I dont know about the CBR master, but on the RC you need to bleed the banjo bolt on the master. Just apply a little pressure on the lever and just bearly crack the bolt.

One nice thing about the CBR radial master is the bleeder right on the master, so no need bleed the banjo bolt.

Oddly enough my 06 R1 is the worst i have ever used and no matter what i can't get bite

putting a Rc51 front on my R1 or even the 04 CBR
