Default Rear exhaust weld break

'03, 40k miles. OEM rear exhaust broke at weld point about 3 inches from first gasket (next to rear shock). Guess I'm in the market for that rear header pipe...if anybody has a stock one laying around let me know what you want for it.

Amazing how lack of back pressure changes the way the bike runs. Came home on what felt like 2/3 power. Started the bike up today after removing plastics to find the leak easier...bike seemed very hesitant to fire up.

Those of you that have welded instead of replacing the pipes...how did it work out for you?

Hey 1blink,

Welding the rear Header or anywhere for that matter... Should NOT be a problem. LOL The break you have just described here is where Mine broke for the "first" time (2 more times since then and I've got right around 48,000 now) about a 1++yrs ago!
Funny thing IS.... Mine had approx. the same mileage as yours when it happened the first time...

IF You have any problems getting her welded up, let me know....

Exhausts frequently break after welding, so many
people think it's not a good thing to do.

Not true. The problem with welding exhausts is
that few people have the correct jig to position
it while you weld it.

So, usually what happens is that the exhaust pipe
warps, and when you put it back on, it doesn't
fit very well (if at all), and it's under stress, and
it quickly breaks again.

The thing to do, is after the exhaust is back on,
if it is under stress, to heat it up with an oxy-acetalyne
torch until it is cherry red in a band. Tighten up
the exhaust bolts or nuts.

Now that you have stress-relieved the exhaust,
it will last for a long time.
