Default Oil Level question.... I know I know... Ive searched

so I changed my oil tonight... was thinking about the rotella but just couldnt bring myself to do it haha. Went with amsoil, so I drain the oil, change the filter and put four quarts in her. The level through the site glass is perfect.... I fire her up let her run for til shes reads a temp then I shut her down. I look in the site glass and no ol level to be found? I waited awhile thinking maybe it needed to settle again but after a maybe 10 or so minutes still nothing. YES the bike is on both tires (no stands) and standing up even (no side stand) . Shes been sitting in my garage for the past couple weekes with only a couple cranks on her here and there. I DID forget to fire her up before I changed the oil... could that be my issure? Letting the oil settle for a week or so then changing it plus the filter?

I searched around and around and believe me.... an oil issue is THE LAST THING I WANTED to ask about.

any advice would be great!

Are you using an after market oil filter that's bigger then OEM?

With a quick look, Most oil I have recorded in my records after Oil and filter change is 4.5 to 4.7 qts.

Temp. with when you drained your oil has Nothing to do with, how much oil will show when you've finished your oil change

IF You really don't have any oil showing what so ever... YOU are safe to pour in .5 more qt. with NO problem.

I'm willing to bet that will bring it up too... LOL

Peace

Man Ive run Rotella in everything Ive ever owned for the past 8+years. I got over 270k on a isuzu with it, 23+ on the rc, hell I got 30k on a sv. Its cheap, works and I change it often.

On to your question...you measure your oil? Just pour that shit in, fill it to the top of the sight glass cold, run it, shut it down and let it sit. Add a little if needed. On some bikes the difference from not reading in the glass and over the top is a few .OZ Amsoil...paaaleaase.

RVTMAVERICK: Im using the OEM filter, I have no problem with adding a little more oil. I just wanted to get a second opinion on it. Every thread I read everyone was saying 4 quarts so when I put 4 in and she was still low thats where my concern came up. She fired up fine and the oil light never came on so Im sure the oil I added just pumped through the lube system and just needs to be topped off with a little more.

robfromsc: I def wanted to try the rotella, Im really thinking about it. $18 instead of $50, pretty sweet deal with more frequent oil changes! From what Ive read its good stuff BUT the issues I ran into were everything I read said use rotella C ....all I could find was rotella T ? i havent ventured into using other oils so i was a little scared to stick something where I had any doubts, in my bike. A few members go both ways (hahaha) on having their bikes sound like a can filled with bolts? Have you had any problems with excessive engine noise?

I was really expecting a slaughter house when I logged on to zilla this morning for the oil question, but surprisingly just good info.... I guess I wake up to early for the rest of the guys to put in their lol

Thanks again guys!

No slaughter house man, this is the kinder version of zilla!

I run the dyno rottella. Walmart, autozone, napa. Its the white bottle 15w-40 I think. I've never had a noise issue or anything. Some times you'll catch a deal and can get the gallons for 10bucks, stockup!

Who's bike sounds like that and why are they still riding it? Different oils aren't going to make your bike sound any different. If your bike sounds like the above it aint the oil your using. You have much bigger problems.

Well,... actually, it's true... I thought the same as you do right now, Years ago... but now... I Highly recommend You> Listen and pay attention.. to what your engine sounds like when you have FRESH Oil change... vs OLD Oil....

A fellow RC51er complained years ago about what his RC51 sounded like after Just changing his engine oil and he used> "Mobil MX4T" and I thought WTF... that's like one of the best oils you can buy, right!...?

Well, low and behold... IMHO Dude was 100% correct... I quite using that shite 4+ years ago! FWIW., I have never heard any other engine oil do that but I also stick to ONLY 2 oils now... Mobil 1 MX4t will NEVER Ever go into any of my MCs!

Peace

RVTMAVRICK,

These would be Caterpillar 3400 series piston/rods. Looks like the bearings have around 10,000 hrs on them.

I'm a journeyman diesel mechanic.

I always have used the Honda HP-4 semi synthetic in my bikes. I was told long ago that this is a very high quality oil and stuck with it. I have never had a problem.
