Default How much noise at idle in neutral is normal (w/clutch out)?

I almost always ride wearing earplugs, but tonight I'm glad I didn't - and this may be normal but I'd rather ask first...

Tonight I was coming to a stop at a light after a little ride, and when I let the clutch out in neutral there was quite a bit more reciprocating noise than when I pulled the clutch back in. Not at OMG-yikes levels, just noisier and did not sound like anything actually broken or rattling around.

2000 SP-1 with 13k miles and well maintained, ridden fast but not a stunter/beat on by any means, but she's had the occasional missed shift or two when I was getting the rearsets set up (only one ugly one iirc).

If normal I will proceed on and if not I'd like to know where to start looking for the source of the noise.

Thanks!

dude! its sooo broken, send it to me and I will try my best to fix it

seriously that sounds normal. while stopped you should hear a difference between clutch engauged and not. if your really worried, and it cant hurt, change the oil and pay close attention, look for any metal bits. not sure but the drain plug might have a magnet on the tip. if so, look there.

When you take out earplugs you hear all kinds of things that you wouldnt normally hear...good luck!

Thanks for the replies, folks. I figured the 'whirring' (wibbly nailed the description) sound probably is normal with a the rotating shafts and whatnot in the cases so confirmation was nice. Oil was just changed, looked ok and everything seems normal so I'm gonna relax and enjoy her.

Note: 'normal' on the RC sounds like an oldschool NISMO 5-speed about to chuck a throwout bearing at you.

I know the gear whine and love it. Combined with the race-cores' bellow and the induction snarl it is indeed a seductive song.. And a lid is something I won't ride without.

Maybe I was just being paranoid after running her pretty hard with the I4 1Ks last night at our local 'circuit'. I'd never smelled her at 'battle temperatures' before (tires/brakes/motor all at once).

Rob, I'll let ya know when I can finally point this thing North to ride on some proper roads!

Not this time "SKIPPY" P.W.I.'s occur after 5 on weekdays and Sat.-Sun. Holidays not withstanding

Just pointing out the obvious... when I ride without a lid once or twice a year I am amazed at the sounds eminating from the machine and wonder if it's rod knock piston slap valve lash preignition detonation wheel bearings streched chain or just the way it is.

I know for sure it's never a cam chain noise
