In Hord we Trust
After a fair bit of procrastination on my part a new motor is underway in the house of Hord. Glenn (Rothman's) has been a champion sourcing the base engine and shipping it to Ohio plus helping me track down some of the other parts I was after. Having read every post I could find both here and on Rogue concerning RC51 engine modifications in the end I went with a pretty conservative spec:
Balance and polish crank
OEM con rods
Wiseco pistons
Ported heads
Mori stage 1 cams (I would've gone with stock but these were there so I took 'em)
Durbahn lightweight clutch basket with OEM plates
Factory shift kit
This is not going to be a race motor. I have nothing but respect for the members here who've gone the full monty with custom hi lift cams and custom pistons etc. but all I'm after is a few more ponies. Originally I was just going to source some heads and have J.D. port them and ship them out ... then I figured why not have the man himself build the whole engine. The bike will probably see a few track days but for the most part it'll be for spirited canyon carving. The choice of J.D. Hord as a builder was an easy one for me given the support he has given with my RC31 over the years. I know given a free hand he'd rather lighten the crank and fit Carillo rods etc. but I was swayed by what I'd read from DSteward, EyeP & others regarding this and kept them stock. We are fitting a Durbahn clutch basket however so the thing should still spin up mighty fast. Hopefully J.D. will post up some pics of the motor taking shape and the end of this post will see it mounted in my bike here in Thailand ... though exactly how I'm gonna get it here I haven't figured out yet.

WOW! Pretty amazing having an engine built in another country! LOL
I'd say from everything I've read and heard about JDHord.. Your in good hands!
Only thing I would do different would be to get Dales Billet cams.. since from what I understand the Moris are still casts pieces.. Yes/No?
You have a Thorsten or a TurnOne AirBox already,.. IF Not.. get one asap!
Looking forward to seeing the end results!
Peace Mav.

Cheers Jeff. Yeah I hear you regarding Dale's billet cams & I've come mighty close to pulling the trigger on them believe me. In the end though I'm trying to make the right decisions based on reliability, serviceability (BIG factors over here where qualified assistance is scarce), cost and the type of riding I do. Hopefully I'll get a motor that will perform well and last a long, long time. If it was a Duc I'm after an "S" not an "R"
+1 on the T1 air box plus I've got an Akro full system, PC111, front mounts, Machesini's & Ohlins front and rear so it should be a nice package all in all.

Sounds like a very nice build! Think going with reliability over total hp is a wise idea, bottom end issues are never fun. Pun intended... Waiting for the pics!

It should come out very nice.
As far as the stock rods, I spun mine to 11K every month and never had a problem, 8 race weekend and a dozen track days later. The engine still spun up plenty fast enough to easily spin up the rear, but it was very controllable.

No, it was a complete engine out of a salvage bike. Just meant "here's where we start."

Neat stuff... let me know if there is a slipper in the plans and how that comes out... still couldn't sort out the JTR for the life of me, so the SP2 project bike got a stocker... am curious to see your progression though.
Don't these posts come in winter usually : )

JBS if you dont mind me asking how much was the clutch basket, and did you get it directly from Thorsten, or Josh? Very trick piece by the way.

If you haven't already your gonna wanna hard anodize that basket. Also use the OEM friction plates, they have better machined and wider contact tabs to the basket. The hard coating and better tabs will make the basket last much longer.

Hord is being pretty nice, that engine I sent him was pretty filthy, I could have picked a cleaner one out of the litter. Good thing he has a parts washer!!

Yeah those Durbahn parts are nice. Actually Glenn sourced that one too - it was second-hand, coming out of a bike in Europe somewhere & I honestly can't remember how much it was off the top of my head. I paid for the engine, cams & clutch in one hit and left Glenn with a float for shipping etc. I'll look at the breakdown and let you know. It was way less than new though.
It was also a lot cleaner than the engine he sent Hord apparently

Thanks Damon. I was always intending to use OEM plates, I hadn't considered hard anodizing the basket though.

If im not mistaken the Durbahn clutch basket looks just like a OEM RC clutch basket but just lightened??? Am i wrong?
