I crashed a while back and my confidence was damaged a little, but now its almost all back, but there is a problem with that is that i am young and stupid and after my crash i looked back and thought DAMN im an idiot for what i did before.
so i have calmed down alot on the street but since that confidence and "invincibility" feeling is kicking back in i see myself taking a few more risks. any advice on how to head this off? cause i really really dont wanna end up as part of the scenery of Southern Illinois.
ive tried to go to the back of the pack on the group rides but then the people back there dont like to pay attention and they become almost dangerous to ride around (braking mid corner, rolling off the throttle things like that) thanks

My advice might be of the more obvious variety, but...
First thing I would suggest is that if you feel the group you are riding with is irresponsible and you cannot keep your right hand under control, you need to find a new group to ride with. A good group ride should focus on safety first. The street is way too dangerous of a place to push the envelope.
Second, I would suggest some track days. They really will satisfy your urge to get out some of that "wanna go fast" angst out in a safe environment.
Since I have started doing track days, I have stopped itching to go for "spirited" rides. I still go on weekend rides, but my objective on those rides is far different than it used to be...
FWIW, few trackdays and the street will set you back on your heels when you suddenly understand focusing on anything but where your going is a distraction. If you have any errors on the track and find a run off zone you'll know why the street is no place to run off because you can't. Also I suggest getting another group of people to ride with that you have confidence in following or even leading. Because now you see what is going on behind you. They can ass pack you just as easily as break check you. Good luck
Also, for the record I just want to say that EvilTwin-05 seems to me like he is a genius. Identical answers at the same time. Must be some truth to them, eh?
i understnad the new group thing and i try to ride around people that i know how they will react to different situations, aka people ive ridden with for a long time. but with summer in full swing i dont have many people around that i have ridden with for a while, and the one i thought was trusty enough to behind me almost ass packed me pulling into a parking lot and didn't understand why i made a big deal about it!
track days are a deffinate possibility and i am saving up to do a couple here, and hopfully get a track bike in the fall.

The phucked up part about watching more experienced riders ride, is they make it look so easy. What you don't see is the mistakes they made to get to the level that they're at.......
Ride your own ride. Ride within your limits. The moment you *think* you're better then you really are, reality can change in a heartbeat.

Just my
+1,000. very well written. my exact same thoughts.
plus - i try to read The Pace several times a year as a refresher. it's a great read.
Is this reason enough?? and i thought i was a fairly decent rider.. its a matter of time before good luck runs low and taking a chance is high...
Patella reconstruction on June 13th 2006 and im going under the knife again july 17th 2007 ( my anniversary ) Almost lost my chance of becoming a fireman and almost got booted from the Army. Cant sit on my knees no more and still ( the knee ) is a burden...
Just learn from my mistake...
Oh.. and come to the Track. I was a die hard street rider and now only do track days. You think those spirited runs are fun you havent felt nothing yet man... just give the track one shot.

Well it was about 92 degrees that day and i still wore my Joe rocket leather jacket ( which saved my arm ) but i had jeans on and Boots.
Didnt own full leathers then.. now i do.
Im sure if i had full leathers it wouldve been a better chance but who knows..Dont want to monday morning quarterback this accident. I highsided a bike doing 90 miles an hours.. i feel lucky to be alive and being able to walk.
I did a thread on this crash a while back ( last year ) never read it?

ive done the track and had alot of fun but i also crashed on the first and only day there on the last session (should have mentioned that before) didn't stop me from wanting to do the track again but its just been a money issue since then.. and my gf at the time whichi broke up with recently hated track days and the fact that i would do it again after crashing and frankly getting lucky on damage to me and the bike. im hoping to hit up a few tracks soon tho working two jobs is starting to pay off!
