Default back protector questions

Looking to get a new backprotector. I've never owned one so I'd like to know a couple things before I buy one...

1st. I'm 5'10ish and weigh about 150lbs. I wear a 40 suit and jacket. What size aprox. should I be looking at...

2nd. Around the $150 range what backprotector would y'all recommend?

Thanks!

I have a Teknic. About 80 clams or so. It's OK... I also wear a motoX chest protector as well.

You may want to consider getting something a little nice, (nicer=more $$) and incorporate a chest protector. I've seen fatalities due to chest injuries, and more and more, guys are wearing them and having less issues after crashes.

I'm using Icon Field Armor. Now I know most of you think Icon stuff is for squids but this piece fits under you leather (given you have allowed for a back protector) and seems to give good coverage. I have not crashed it but it does incorporate an area of frontal protection and is very adjustable. For your size, I'd get the large....

Until recently I used my trusty Dainese back protector from 25 years ago. This year I bought a Forcefield Back Protector -- you can find it at Forcefield Back Protector and elsewhere. It's comfortable and while I haven't crash tested it, I believe it would hold up well and distribute any big hits over a wide area. A couple mag reviews also rated it highly. I searched the forums before buying the Forcefield but IMHO no clear winner emerged from the discussions.

I wear this same armour and I have in fact crash tested it.

Repeatedly.

This thing has served me well so far, and is also adjustable with wide range. Icon stuff may be goofy, but this thing works.

I'd recommend the A* Bionic SP Vest. It has chest protection in addition to the CE level 2 Bionic Back protector. It is very comfortable; the vest design keeps everything in place. I got it for $150 shipped at kneedraggers.com a few months back.

I crash tested a Knox Stowaway RSK back protector a few weeks ago and was able to walk away from a lowside/highside combo which had me airborn for 15'. I was also wearing a Knox chest protector which also took a hit during the post landing tumble.

Based on that experience, I recommend Knox.

Tried and tested a Clover back protector here in the UK (a couple of times actually). I also use the A* chest plate that I just started using this season... works really well and the chest plate is a deffinate thumbs up from me....!

Going on further from this, would you guys change a back protector after an off? depending on severity? or would you still use it regardless....?

I looked at mine after my off and it's all fine, not damaged (that I can see on the outside but wandered if the foam stuff could get bashed like the polly in the crash helmet?

Thumbs up

I have two back protectors, I am 6'2"
My oldest one, a cheap $57.00 Tech, (I have to check, I think it's a 7 plate) crash tested, twice. (I really didn't want to test it, but) at about 60mph. Slid on my back like a turtle and I have to tell you..... I did NOT feel a thing!

I decided to buy a better back protector a few years ago, it's an Alpinestars, I bought the 8 plate one which fits me perfect!

I've never crash tested this one, but there is NO doubt in my mind that this back protector will not do better job.... This thing has Awesome Build Quality.... Thick Padding, Shoulder and Waste Straps.... The one down side to this one is, it is pretty heavy, I'll weigh it at lunch time if you want...??

I told you my height, since you are trying to figure out what size you need too... I'm guessing that's what you wanted to know too,....right?

FWIW, when I bought my cheap back protector, way back when, there was not too much to choose from..... So at the time it was one of the bests you could get, top of the line.. Hahahaaha

I Hope this helps...

Peace Maverick

I wear a Bohn Pro Racer back protector. I like it but I too am looking for some chest protection. I want something that will work with both my bikes.

the Knox is constructed with a filled honeycomb core and mine collapsed over the left shoulder blade area so I'm going to replace it.

Yup - the Knox is a single use design, whereas most others (I believe) can still be used after a crash.

You can also check EBay for used ones - I had 2 Bohn back protectors at one point because I kept 2 bikes at different locations and didn't want to haul gear around... I sold one on EBay and the other I keep as a spare (although I would have to search for it.... )

I use the T-Pro Forcefield back protector which I really like, but the Bohn actually had better coverage over the shoulder blades.

this? Spidi Defender Back/Chest Protector - KneeDraggers.com

I google spidi warrior and that's the only thing I see that mentions chest protector at all... I figure I'm not gonna get anything until I need a new suit late this fall or early next spring
