I’m being deployed (Military) and am sadly selling my 2003 RC51 with only 1387 miles. This is the second RC51 I’ve owned in the last 5 years. I absolutely love it! I bought the bike new and since then have been the only person to physically touch the bike. No other person has so far as placed a finger on it (literally). I am an obsessive perfectionist when it comes to bikes (my ex thought I needed medical attention – Ha!). The bike has NEVER seen a drop of rain. Has NEVER been left outside. Has NEVER been below freezing. Has NEVER been dropped or bumped into anything. ALWAYS garage kept. No corner has been cut with this bike.
My break-in procedures are a bit excessive but I guarantee it will dyno at the upper end of the horsepower scale when compared to other RC51s with same modifications on the same dyno. The first thing I did after tailoring it home (before starting it up) is an oil change with Honda’s GN4 10W40. Then I started the bike for 10-20 seconds and did another oil change. I do this to help flush out the metal shavings (glitter) left by the factory when milling the engine. You’d be surprised at what you find. Then I ran the bike for her initial ride of about 1 hour (constantly moving the revs up and down to about 3000-4000 RPM) with cool-downs every 15 minutes or so. Brought her back home and (you guessed it) did another oil change. Nest day took her out again this time for about 4 hours total with cool-downs every 45 minutes and not exceeding 6000 rpm but constantly moving the revs. Then another oil change…This is getting lengthy… The rest went something like this with complete cool-downs every hour or so…
Oil change @ 150 miles varying RPMs to 5000 with brief moment to 6000
Oil change @ 300 miles varying RPMs to 6000 with brief moment to 7500
Oil change @ 600 miles varying RPMs to 7500 with brief moment to redline
Oil change @ 1200 miles still varying RPMs, brisk riding with brief moment to redline
I recommend the next oil change be done at 2500 miles and switching to Honda’s HP4 (synthetic) WITHOUT Moly. And then every 1500 miles or at the end of each season.
