This is about 100 miles west of me. Joplin is a decent sized town of 50,000, but is very spread out. Pretty humbling to think what nature can do. It basically went right through the center of town around dinner time Sunday.
The second picture is of the hospital. They had five minutes warning and could only move people to the hallways. Generators were taken out, so the entire hospital was without power for hours as they tried to evacuate. Reports are of people being blown/sucked out of the upper floors of the hospital. Tweets from people last night (there was about 2 hours of light left in the day), said there were bodies everywhere. Expect death toll to rise way above 89 this morning.
And what it is doing right now in this area? Tornado watch and thunderstorms at the moment...

ABC news actually addressed tonight whether this years huge number of tornados was due to global warming. An expert on global warming said no, it was due to unusually cool water off the northern pacific coast which brings cold fronts down and they meet warm moist gulf air.
So the answer to our questions is yes and no. No gog, in this case it is not global warming. And yes, you are load that would have best been swallowed.

Some friends of ours built a house a couple of years ago with a safe room. Basically a reinforced concrete box with a huge steel door to their basement (safe room is not "under" the house, but buried in the slope of their lot). Another huge steel door to the exterior.
If you look at the power of the tornado in Joplin (most powerful tornado ever recorded in MO BTW), nothing could survive short of some place like that.
They have 120 bodies in the morgue with only about half identified as of last night. I'm sure some of the 1500 missing are there, and surely some of the 1500 have been unable to contact anyone to be checked off the missing list. But it is the remainder that makes you wonder where they are.
