My wife noticed Tuesday morning that her GPS had been stolen out of her car in our driveway. She had not locked the car.
At the time we chalked it up - these things almost never happen in our town, but it was bound to eventually.
Then my sister called on Thursday. Her iPod had been stolen out of her car on the next block over, but it was recovered by the police. Her name was engraved on it - that's how they contacted her. Turns out a neighbor had caught a kid who lives on the same block where my sister's car iPod was stolen breaking into his car, chased him down, caught him and called the cops. The kid was in possession of dozens of GPS's and iPods. The police have received about 50 reports of goods stolen from cars on those two or three blocks (including ours) all in a two or three night span.
Hearing this, my wife went down to the station, filed a report, but was disappointed to find that her GPS was not among those recovered.
The kid literally lives around the block from us. I hear that he is not cooperating with police - makes me think he's protecting someone else involved in his fun little plan, and that there are more stolen articles somewhere... Word is that this kid's parent or parents are military, attached to nearby Scott AFB, and that previously the family was evicted from base housing at another Air Force Base for this kid's antics.
I can afford another GPS, and I think my wife has learned her lesson about locking her doors (as has the rest of the neighborhood).
What, if anything, should we do about this thief in the neighborhood who almost certainly took our property, but won't cough it back up? Do we just sit back and let the police do their thing? Is it worth taking his parents to court? Report it to our auto insurance company and let them press for compensation? What do you think?
Call the prosecuting attorney's office and ask them how to go about making a restitution claim. Often times a judge will order restitution during sentencing.

Contact the local PD and let them know that you, along with the rest of the victims, would like to be kept informed on what's being done about the matter. Make sure that they're actively pursuing an investigation instead of just sweeping it under the rug as a closed case. If that doesnt seem satisfying then I'd also consider contacting the municipal prosecutor and/or mayor's office. The sooner your community grabs the bull by the horns that this sort of thing wont be tolerated the lesser the chances of your community turning into a sesspool in the near future.
Of all the reports you know of, there werent any forced entry reports? I ask cuz I wouldnt be too sure that the lil fvcker(s) wouldnt had stolen your wife's GPS if the door was locked. Lastly, if you have any pawn shops, go check them out, also check your local ads, craigs list and ebay for any of the stolen items.
How 'bout taking junior for a ride out in the country and delivering a little old time justice......................(just a thought ) I'd also contact his Daddys Commanding Officer to let him know about the CONTINUING actions of his employees dependant.

Now there someone that knows the meaning of justice.
I hate theives, if he's man enough to steal, he's man enough to get his ass torn up.
I don't care how old he is, mummsy and pa-pa are responsible for him. I'd chat up daddy.
Thief was a seventeen year old. Had warrants. The guy who caught him was another seventeen year old - caught him in the act of breaking into his car, chased him and his accomplice down in said car, tackled him two blocks away, and apparently beat the holy hell out of him before the police arrived.
Thief remains in jail half a week later.
Also, thief's parents are renting the house they are in from a family we know - the homeowners have been told of the commotion their renters have caused in the neighborhood.
Going to make his capturer a batch of cookies or something...
Go make GOOD friends with his cell mate. Visit the guy, buy him things, even take care of his family if he has one. Mention you want a little peep squeeks life to be miserable. See if he steals again being bent over a sink being made into someones little puppy.
For those of you think this is cruel I actually learned this sercret from a MN District Court Judge who use to host a local TV show on PBS. He said nothing converts a would be crook like a asshole big enough to drive a bus into.

I had almost the same thing happen to me (thief stole gps which was in a locked mount off my R1200GS-he brought tools). He also took the fog lights. In what was a series of amazing miracles and some excellent police work they caught the guy and recovered only the GPS.
Upshot of it all, I applied with the state for restitution for items destroyed or not recovered. When (if?) he gets out he'll have to work off those items and make a payment plan with the state who in turn pay me and other victims. Talk to your local D.A. or prosecuting attorney to find out if your state has the same kinda deal.
