Default Hawk GT Diet plan

I'm looking for ways to reduce weight and clutter on my Hawk GT.

So I was wondering if any of you have experience putting the Hawk on a diet. I know it's a pretty light bike anyway, but advice is appreciated.

Along the same lines as a diet, if i want to reduce visable clutter can I relocate the fuel pump, rectifier, etc anywhere I want? I was thinking of trying to hide as much as I can underneath the seat.

As for vent tubes etc can I just remove and toss those items??

Thanks!

If I were going to lighten the hawk up I'd start with the subframe, the tripple trees(the bottom is steel and very heavy) and, then the wheels. Get rid of the airbox if you have not already.

Can I use an F2 or F3 lower triple? I know that's a popular front end replacement, but do I need the whole thing or just the bottom?

The airbox has been removed, but I haven't got pod filters on it yet (I'm just starting my winter project on it)

Are you suggesting to cut down the original sub-frame, or are there suitable aftermarket sub-frames for sale?

Let me elaborate on what I'd like to do:

Lighter smaller instument cluster (suggestions?)
Sub frame (suggestions?)
M4 Exhaust
remove air box
Smaller headlight (suggestions?)
Hugger or chain guard in carbon (suggestions?)
Rear Wave Rotor
lighten the rearsets
Remove centerstand
Smaller battery??? (suggestions?)

I'm thinking this might lose about 20-25 lbs... maybe....

Other ideas?

Thumbs up

Troll the photo gallery at hawkgt.com for some ideas. Then you should be able to email and/or contact the owner with questions.

For the rearsets, give Rod a contact at Hiperform.com:

He's got lot's of other tasty bits for the Hawk as well! Also JD Hord at Hordpower.com. Emailing Rod and/or JD may glean some ideas as well.

Be sure to photo the project as you go!

The stock headlight weighs almost nothing, but a newer design would make the output a lot better.
Hugger: THE Thorsten Durbahn hugger in carbon.
Other: Ditch the heavy (& high) stock clip-ons for nice light weight Vortex or Woodcraft.

Are the stock clipons really heavy? I was going to switch them out anyway for a more aggressive riding position, I guess it's a 2 for 1 deal!

Anyone know if the stock radiator is heavy???

The stock rearset is no heavier than aftermarket. And more comfortable too. The f2 bottom tripple is the same as the hawks. Most bikes from the factory come with a steel lower. When you asked at first i listed it as just a suggestion. You'd have to go to a custom tripple tree set to get an aluminum set. Not worth it unless you want a different offset. If your goal is to lighten up the bike putting a f2 front end or any other front with dual calipers and disk is working backwards. There are other ways to get better braking and suspension.

For the sub frame, depending on how handy you are you could either hack up the stock or make a copy of the hyperform pretty easy.

Your tires could also be a great source of weight loss too. Some of the softer compound tires are much lighter than the regular street type.

I'm keeping the stock rearsets, I'm just going to lighten them up the best I can.

I'm also keeping the stock single brake front end, I was just wondering if the F2 lower triple clamp was lighter than the hawk. Sounds like it's not.

Still wondering about the radiator.. or anything else! Cases?? Shock? Spring? etc

Radiator is pretty light as they go. The cases are good. The shock could be replaced with a lighter unit. Springs are about the same unless you get one of those fancy ti. ones.

There are lighter batteries this one should work. Stock one is 8lbs.

Battery Type:
Yuasa YTZ7S

Voltage: 12
Capacity: 6
Dimensions: 4 7/16" x 2 3/4" x 4 1/8"
Weight: 4.6 lbs.
Metric Dimensions: 113mm x 79mm x 105mm
Metric Weight: kg
Polarity:

Acid Volume: N/A
Amps: 0.6
C.C.A.: 130

You could also make a bracket to hold it low on the engine to lower the weight of the bike too.

If you want to get serious then this is the way to go, Hawk-Durbahn

Then send the motor to Hord.

Durhban has nice stuff. If you've got the coin. Love that new tail/tank but that will never happen for me. That would be my down payment for my duke2 or my nc35.

Love the Durbahn stuff too, and I've been following the developement of the Hawk GT stuff. I think there are other higher priorities for Durbahn though as the Hawk stuff has been a long time in the process.

However if the price doesn't kill me....... I'll be watching for the completion of the combo seat/tail section.

Meanwhile I want to enjoy what I do have and making it "mine" is part of the fun.

Stock subframe weight?? Hiperform subframe?? Anyone got the scoop on this?

Does my estimate of 25lbs sound reasonable? Basically here's the goal:

385-390lbs wet ready to ride with ~55-60hp at the wheel.

Wow.... I've got the subframe off and all the electrical unpluged...

This is gonna be a serious task! I've never done more than basic stuff like oil changes and exhaust pipes.

I'm a little freaked out!

How do I post pics if I don't have a personsonal web page (or something like that)?

One more thing.. I know a few people are reading this (not many I know... but I don't really want to sign up for another forum so hopefully enough of you have the answers I need)

Do I NEED an overflow tank for the radiator?? I saw 1 hawk where the guy had put the battery where the overflow tank is.... I think this is a GREAT place for the battery.. what do YOU think?

How about this mini overflow tank for dirtbikes?? DirtWerkz - Ignition Racing Radiator Overflow Canisters

Well the project has been temporarily postponed as I have to get a job.

Yep, so I put the Hawk back together (about 90% anyway) but I sure do have a lot of little extra parts!! LOL

If it resumes I'll post here.
