Exclamation Hard Launches, the driveline locks & releases

What is up with this: under hard launches, the driveline locks, releases, and locks again.

I read this in an August, 1998 super twin shootout on motorcycle online article:

VTR -- under hard launches, the driveline locks, releases, and locks again. We have no idea why, but it's not fun -- staffer Aaron Hammel nearly looped the bike a couple times while trying to get a good launch. "You've got to time the lock-up properly," remarked Plummer, who turned in respectable 60-foot times at the drag strip (a good measure of how effectively a bike and rider launch off the line), "come off the line at a lower rpm and slip the clutch mostly out, climb up over the tank, peg the throttle and dump the clutch. The bike will abruptly wheelie, then settle down before you bang second -- it's not powerful enough to powerwheelie through the gears if you're sitting up over the front end."

I just purchased a nice 1998 SH that was purchased new in 2002! For $3,500 with 14,000 miles it came with tank bra Rf-900 Hemet not even broke in, two Joe Rocket Jackets two sets of gloves, Honda service manual never opened extra spark plus and oil filters and a K/N air filter which I getting rid of for stock. On my first ride it happened to me and it scared the Sh_t out of me.

How do I fix this and why does it do that????????

Does the driveline stay locked when it locks for the second time? I've never heard or experienced this. How hard of a launch does it take? Drag strip launch? I would like to avoid finding out the hard way. It sounds like possibly under extreme torque situations the gearbox is trying to engage two gears at the same time. That is the only thing I can think of that would cause such a bind under those conditions.

I don’t know after it did it twice I calmed it down and took off normally with out staging. It takes a drag strip launch to make it happen, 3000 to 4000 RPMs and it feels like the bike is going to back-flip. But, can the gears lockup when the clutch is engaged? The clutch is not slipping or acting strangely during even hard riding. Would, stronger clutch springs help?

Thank you for your help,

Stuart
