Default track to street conversion

tried to sell it in track trim and had no luck so i decided to spend some time and make it street legal... there are some things you guys might not like but im on a VERY limited budget

for the headlight, i went w/ the "endurance" style. instead of using the usual cbr400rr headlight like everyone usually does, i got one thats DOT approved so this whole thing wont go to waste w/ a cop giving a fix-it ticket. The headlight is about 5" in diameter so its def. on the larger side.

undertail is one i made a while back

turn signals are nothing special, im just gonna repaint them to remove the fake carbon fiber on them

ill be updating this thread daily w/ pictures... its actually alot more fun than i thought it would be

here's the bike before everything started...

so day one of the build...

decided to use a cone shaped headlight tube which would make the fairing hole smaller than the headlight... ofcourse no one makes it so i grabbed a bunch of fiberglass, resin, and a good ole traffic cone... (sorry for the crappy cellphone pics, i forgot i had a camera in the house lol)

here's the tube cut, sanded (very rough), and tabs mounded for the headlight... forgot to take pics of making the tabs but its self explanatory

cut the fairing for the tube, drew a bunch of circles (different diameters) and started expanding from the innermost out... stopped once it looked like i got a good balance of the headlight being recessed vs. exposed... yes the hole is not a perfect circle, keep scrolling...
the four lines are alignment markings for when i angled the tube w/ the headlight turned on so that it points infront of the bike (yes im also going to make the headlight adjustable)... i later used those markings to realign the tube when glassing them to the fairing, once its off the bike ofcourse

mounted the tube, used a little fiberglass in three spots to hold it in place before laying more glass around the tube

first mistake of the build... circles turn to ovals when the perpendicular part is not at a 90degree angle...

day one done, one hellova long ass day!

day two!

laid more glass down to make the mount solid... and coated the inside w/ epoxy (didnt feel like sanding my retarded dremeled sand job)

cut the tip of the tube off, made some sandable filler out of epoxy and umm, filler powder (thats whats its called lol, kinda reminds me of baby powder)

then went to the store and bought a bunch of shit... HVLP gun, had some urethane paint mixed up, clearcoat/hardener, paint accessories.

and day 3!

dont have too many pics, yet, but will take them tomorrow and throw them into the thread...

bought a couple inline water/oil separators for the compressor, some brackets/joints for wood, a clear plastic tarp, sandpaper/blocks, etc

sanded the tube, made/laid more filler in, let harden...

while hardening, build a paint booth... came out a little too big, but whatever, didnt want to be limited on room

had some wood laying around (har har lol)

looks like a mini mayan temple

sanded and finally finished the tube!!!!!!!1...
took so freaking long but once i got into the zone of sanding, it felt like i was meditating... hours felt like minutes (epoxy is not easy to sand! coulda used bondo but epoxy is a little more kosher)

went from 60 grit, to 220, to 600... ready for primer!

day four

slept in and woke up around noon, ate breakfast and started sanding, got done and picked up the can of primer... all gone!

left and spent about 2hours looking for white spraycan primer, went EVERYWHERE (like 5-6stores) and i guess its the hottest shit on the market. ugh

ended up picking up gray, got home and started prepping the bodywork for paint... shortly after starting i remembered how much i hate prepping pieces w/ a passion, i mean, i REALLY REALLY hate it! spent all day doing 2.5 pieces, did the tail, lower, and some of the upper... gonna finish prepping tomorrow and hopefully start painting on tuesday, then clearcoat on wednesday...

dont have too many pictures as it wasent really an exciting day

Great work. The headlight hole looks damn good once you got it primed.

I'm amazed when people do these projects in one fell swoop. Never seems to work that way for me...

day five!

had to run around and do a bunch of crap all day so didnt really have as much time to work on everything as i planned to...

redid the lower and tail (O.C.D. reasons lol, was just not happy enough, had to sand some more)... did the fender and pretty much finished up the upper (needs just one more layer of primer, 95% of the imperfections are gone)

dont really have any interesting pictures again as you guys can visualize what sanded pieces look like lol, buuuut i did take some of the upper w/ the headlight just because i was bored ... the hole looks a little funky and offset in the pictures but it looks 100x better in person

headlight held right along side of the hole, just so you guys can get an idea of the size differences

gonna finish the upper tomorrow and start on the tank... then start shooting paint on wed!!

day 6 & 7

completely finished the upper so its ready for paint

spent both days on the tank... pulled the dent and used some bondo to shape the tank... maaaaaaan was this a pain in the ass to do, the worst part was how long it took bondo to cure so that i can sand it... but i think it came out pretty good, especially since i did it all by eye/touch

i would much rather have bought a new tank but again, limited budget...

the corners look offset in this picture but they are pretty even and you cant tell at all, i think the camera angle made it worse than it is

so gotta do one more sand job on the tank and even things out a bit more (need better light/rest to find the imperfections)... then prep it for paint

then get everything to start shooting paint on friday morning... cant freaking wait!!

if your putty is taking too long to set you're probably mixing it improperly...

nah it sets in like 1-2min, but isnt "sandable" for about an hour, i mean it is but its soft and chunks away (well not literally chunks, but the dust is bigger than i like, dunno how to explain lol)...

then you're mixing it wrong! hahaha...

all the putty i've worked with is sandable after a beer and a couple smokes.

the only stuff you may have trouble with is glazing putty as it air dries, so thicker areas will take longer to set up.

LOL!!

gotta bust my balls and shit huh? haha

im setting it up by the book mang, ive played w/ it a time or two before ... realistically ya its ready to sand after 20min but i just like the consistency of it after about double the time, just hardens/firms up a tad more... in anycase though, no more bondo for me, threw that can in the garage and looking forward to not touching it again for a long long time lol
