Default Thorsten Version 2 Alternator and balanced rods

G'day, I have a Thorsten Version 2 Alternator and a set of balanced rods for sale. I bought these items with a truck load of other stuff early last year when we were building my race bike. The Alternator was installed in the bike by my mechanic then removed as our first race was a 4 hour endurance race and he did not want to run it. The alternator has since be sitting on my shelf in my office ever since. I have a sponsorship deal with the shop and they supply labour, we have had blown engine recently and the labour bill has mounted up so extra parts as fancy alternators have been shelved. The rods are brand new as supplied by Thorsten, we are using HRC rods now (which look identical to these) so these are for sale.

These items cost me $920 US for the Alternator and $370 US for the balanced rods.
Selling price is $900 Australian and $350 Aus with exchange rate against our weak dollar thats a bargain.
Cheers Brett

Hey Brett,

Pardon my ignorance but could you explain what was involved in balancing these rods and what the benefit is to the engine build?

Also, what differences have you found between your HRC rods and the OEM ones?

Lastly, I was told that if you are going to run a set of lightweight rods such as pankl ti ones, you cannot run this lightweight alternator system. Did you come across this same info during your build?

Thanks in advance and good luck with your sale.

Stunna

G'day Stunna
The rods are weighed and the casting marks are linished off one so it can match the exact weight. Balancing rods, pistons and crank help the motor spin up faster. As for HRC rods compared to these standard, we could not see any phisycal difference, we thought maybe the actual composition of the metal was different. All I know was the HRC ones cost more.

As for the alternator, I dont know I have never run it. Harley my mechanic took it out before the original build was complete. The first race after the build last year was a 4 hour endurance race with pit stops he wanted to run the original alternator just in case we had a problem starting the bike.
13:1 Hi comp pistons need a good kick in the guts to get them going.
Im sure Thorsten and the other guys that run the alternators could give you more feedback.

Cheers Brett

usually when something gives, it's because of a spike of some sort. having multiple items rotating around the crank at two different weights causes spikes in pressure or tension or whatever.. by having those items of identical weight, it reduces the amount of pressure spikes

maybe one of the engineers around here can put that in the correct terminology, but as far as i know that's the biggest benefit
