Default RC51 Aluminum Gas Tank Production Possibility

One of the long term projects I've been working on is having a run of aluminum gas tanks created. This, other than cams, seems to be one of the last areas of modification for the bikes, not very commonly done. I am to the point of having a prototype completed and ready for replication over and over again. They would be individually hand made, pressure tested and sealed, ready for paint and installation. The production of the tanks is extraordinarily expensive, hence the costs.

They would come in raw aluminum (non-painted) and be a very close approximation of the stock tank in terms of dimensions, capacity, fitment (stock mounting points) and fit both SP1 and SP2. They would use stock fuel pumps and accept stock gas caps or aftermarket versions. Essentially, be a direct replacement to the existing tank, minus some very minor cosmetic differences.

The only two caveats to them are: First, they would not work with stock airboxes. But I think many of the people interested in them would not be running them anyway. Second, the defined lines of some of the relief areas on the tank would not be as pronounced. Parts that need to be recessed and defined would still be there (for the front of the seat, the tail "ears" where they touch the tank and several other small areas like the pivot point and mount at the triple).

I know there are several manufacturers out there who specialize in lightweight tanks, but from what I have seen, they all have very long lead times and are very expensive.

Other options like fiber-based tanks (with bladders) can also serve the same purpose, but I just like the longevity afforded by metal.

My goal for the project was to lose weight at the highest point of the bike. The stock tank weighs ~12.5 lbs without pump, cap or liquid. The goal for the replacement aluminum tank would be ~5 lbs (a savings of ~7lbs or almost 60%). I also wanted to offer the replacement tank as a unique, sort of "final" modification for owners of the bikes who have already pushed modding to the limit.

So ultimately, my question (see poll) is whether there is actually a market for this and would people be willing to buy them. I can probably answer my own question by just having a bunch of them made and finding out whether they sell or not and at what price. I just thought another avenue would be to ask fellow riders what their opinions were. I'm hoping to get honest feedback and thoughts on the project, which is why I posted and didn't just roll the dice on production already. I know there are lots of very experienced owners on SZ who can help.

This isn't really a group-buy type of thread. As like most entrepreneurial endeavors, I will just front the money and hold the inventory. I'm certainly not looking for any type of commitment, but I'm just wondering what others feelings are on having a relatively expensive modification available for their bikes.

Thanks for reading and your opinions!

Default Eti fuel cell

Ben,

I'd be onboard if it were a few months earlier but I just got my fuel cell. I would recommend however if u did the tank you should build a working air box to go with it too sell as a kit. I'm sure that more people would be interested in this than just the tank as a lot have thorsten or turn one air box's with snorkels. That's my two cents brother. If you need a Mori copy to help let me know.

Going to be a hard sell for those with Turne One or Thorsten boxes if they are incompatible. I like the idea though.

To clarify, these will not work with stock airboxes (the ones that Honda included from the factory). I'm sorry if that wasn't clear initially.

I was just thinking that since the open top style boxes seal against the bottom of the tank, one differing from OEM under there may not work. Didn't mean to misinterpret.

This is something I have looked at a few times. Thought about picking up a Beater tank at one time. Your price would have to be better than that.

Current price with conversion is about $2k.

I nearly pulled the trigger on a beater tank also. Apart from the weight saving I like the fact they hold a few litres more than standard, I also like the factory style breather. I couldn't get a definitive answer as to whether or not they would work with a TurnOne air box which made me hesitate.

I'm interested.

i'd buy one, Ben. As long as it will be ok with a Mori airbox.

Yes, if under $4,000 dollars? Are you fkng serious? For a gas tank?

Oh wait, changed my mind. Give me a couple, and I'll take a $300 sidestand too if you've got one.

Sorry, I couldn't help it.

I might be interested, but have some questions:
- as said earlier, would have to fit with my Durbahn airbox
- shipment to Europe (Netherlands), cost ??
- would like a "race-style" vent on top of the tank

I think it would be a hard sell at anything above $2,000. Sure you have some buyers, but the customer base for our bikes is getting smaller every day.

Will you make enough money if you sell them at say $1000-$1500?

Will there be enough sales volume to offset the reduced profit per unit?

I'm sure you've already thought of all this though Ben. I hate to say it, but it happens over and over again with high dollar items in a small market like ours. It is the same thing that happened with Öhlins rear shocks. Dan Kyle (I'm assuming it was him) convinced them to do another run because there was enough demand, and now they still have enough left on the shelf that they are (were?) blowing them out for close to $900 new. I hate to say it, but it is also a possibility for Simon and his exhaust he is working on. I'm sure that it will be worth every penny, but the people who can afford and justify spending $3500 on an exhaust aren't a growing subsection of RC51 owners community.

Everyone wants to have the nice stuff, and talks the talk. But when it is time to cut the BS and pay up people get quiet real fast. Sorry, I guess this just sounds like a big downer and I'm sure you've thought of all of this. I guess what I am saying is that you should take the results of your poll will a grain of salt. Personally, I think the $1000-$1500 price range is your best bet to get any kind of sales. 1500-2000 is pushing it, but you will still sell some, but over $2k and it will be tough.

Would I buy an aluminum tank? Hell yes!

Would I pay over $1000 for one? Not a chance
