Default Tank Rust

Hey ya'll,
I have my tank off the bike and will have it off for probably a few more months. The question is - How does one stop rust from forming when the tank is off and empty? I have tried and failed repeatedly to get that last drop of gas out but cant seem to get it. Its located out in my shed right now....I would take it inside but the wife would have my ass if the house starts stinking like gas.

If I dry the sucker out completely will it still rust on the inside still? Also, how do you go about getting that last scrap of gas out? I was thinking of just lighting it on fire........

Thanks

I've always run some StaBil throught the tank and fuel pump prior to pulling the tank for an extanded amount of time. After that try pulling the fuel pump as well if you want to try getting all the gas out.

Just put a small amount of clean oil in the tank and move it around a bit. If you can, try and place it some place warmer or at least where the temp won't fluctuate enough to create comdensation.

You gotta pull the pump out, then stick the end of a vacuum bleeder hose in there, then after you get as much out as you can you start swabbing with shop towels until no more puddles. Blow some compressed air through it to try to get as much of the vapors out as you can, then let it sit in the garage for a couple days with the cap and pump removed.
Actually I haven't looked at my spare tank in a while, so I don't know if it has rusted at all. But I did all the above, then taped over the openings, and boxed it up in the garage.

Here is what i am doing

Once all the gas is out, remove the fuel pump and get as dry as possible. Then drop a few silica packets in the tank and seal up the tank. I've had mine off for 2 1/2 years and no rust in mine.

I had a spare TLR tank kicking around for years with a few of those packets in it. Was still mint inside when I sold it.
