I have a brand new Sharkskinz fibregalss solotail. If you are not familiar with Sharkskinz that are top of the line. The kit includes Sharkskinz solotail mount kit that I paid and extra $60 for.

$260.00 shipped inc mount kit. This less than I paid .

It is a long story and somewhat confusing, but I am associated with Cycle Tech. CT is owned by all-around good guy Rick McWaters. During my early racing days CT was my sponsor, then when I left another profession and decided to wrench full time, I came on board at CT as a hired gun of sorts in the service dept, working there as needed but also building/tuning V-twin sportbikes as Meccanica Corse. I still handle some of CT's service work but I have been concentrating more and more on expanding my business lately, with a new building in the plans and all that. Rick is a good guy and if you want to buy your parts thru him that's fine, but if you want my tech advice on tuning, installing products, etc, it doesn't flow freely unless you buy thru my company. It just came to a point where I was on the phone several hours a day giving advice and it was costing me $$ out of my pocket, literally, because I wasn't making money on the sale. So I've been "restructuring" a bit, which has been a too-long process due to some real estate hassles, but I'm working on it.

Hope that made sense, and didn't come across as negative towards CT. My goals are different that CT's, that's all it amounts to. If there's anything I can do for you Hawk guys here, all you have to do is ask.

J.D.

Thanks JD for that explanation.
I have never contacted CT, just researched both web sites came up and I added to my favorites, compared info and found it to be almost identical. I was confused especially having same product, service , similar phone #s, addresses and prices.
Thanks for clearing that up for me/us.
By the way, I have two hawks. My plan is to have one Street version with 55-60 hp , other Street/semi-track version 60-70 hp. My goal is nice ride , nothing too wild, reliability is a factor, cost is a factor.
I know its hard to quote $$ figures, but an approximate..what would it cost to get that done.
I would ship a complete motor, have you do the folowing:
1-head work..mild(stage 1)
2-cam street grind
3-663 kit
Keep stock valves and springs ?
I will use stage 3 factory jet kit, foam filters with hyperform under tail exhaust .
What would recommend ?
I wish you had a swap program.. that is, I send you stock complete motor(core) plus $$, you send me a built motor. Price will be according to parts , work and HP produced..that would be ideal .
Thanks .
Lenny

A 55-60hp Hawk is very easy, 663 kit, mild cams, pipe and jet. No head work needed, stock valve springs are fine. That combo will make right around 60hp, in fact I have built one recently with the Hiperform exhaust that you want, and it made right at 59-60hp if I recall. Stage 1 head work would add another 3-4hp if desired.

70hp isn't too hard either, but there are several paths to get there. The best way IMO is something I have recently developed. I now have 700cc kits available that use lightened pistons, they are very close to stock weight, so cracking the whole engine open to balance the crank isn't neccessary. The next part of the package is a set of my stage 2 heads with oversized intake valves. Cap it off with a mild camshaft, and you'll have a 70+hp Hawk that makes tons of midrange power, perfect for street or track. You can keep the bottom end stock, but you do take a slight calculated risk with the OEM rods at that hp level. You may also need a larger radiator.

It is possible to build a ~70hp Hawk a little more cheaply using stg. 1 heads and the 174x8 race cam, but the midrange isn't nearly as nice as the way listed above.

Also, I have a new camshaft undergoing beta testing that has 95% of the 174x8's top end power, but a lot more midrange, but it's not quite ready for public release just yet. (very soon!)

Prices are all listed on my site but I'll go thru some of them here:

663 kit $225
700 LW kit $325
Cylinder boring $60/pr
Cams $350
Slotted cam sprockets $40
Top end gasket kit $67 (all seals, washers, gaskets, etc)
Stg. 1 heads $350 (includes valve job)
Stg. 2 heads $750
Factory 3.0 jet kit $75
Uni pod filters $25/pr
Hiperform ex. (I'm a dealer) $500
Labor to install above, degree cams, set up carbs, etc (engine out of frame) $300

So for 60hp you are looking at roughly $1100, plus the cost of the pipe/jet/filters, $600. For 70hp it's around $1600 plus the pipe/jet/filters.

I wish I could do an engine exchange, but it just isn't practical. Some core engines would have 8k miles, some 75k miles, there's no way to make it work equitably for everyone. However I do stock most parts and have heads/cylinder/piston kits on the shelf most of the time.

I hope this helps, email me with any questions.

Default Hawk

It looks like I will be spending some $$ this winter.
JD, I do have some questions.
1- do you need my carbs and exhaust to finish the motor job ?(i have my own jet kit and exhaust).
I would want mild cam, stage 1 porting, cam sprockets, 663 kit.. the 63HP job.
2-what would you need to start the job ?
3-what is approximate lead time ?
Thanks
Lenny

I don't need the carbs or exhaust, I will give you jetting recommendations when the engine is done. All I need to start the job is your engine! Crate it up as "efficiently" as you can, keep the whole thing under 150#, that way you can use UPS to ship it instead of truck freight. Fed Ex also works fine. (if you take off the starter that saves a few lbs...) When you send the engine, also mail a check for approx. 50% of the expected $$ total as a deposit. If I have a firm time on when I can expect the engine, usually turnaround is pretty quick, a week or so. That sorta depends on how many engines I have in line and Megacycle's lead time on cams, etc.
