Default hawk carb issues

First off Hello everyone.

I have a 89 Hawk thats been severly modded (keihin flatslides, 1mm overbore, J&E pistons, M4 high pipe). Unfortunatly I lowsided at about 10 MPH. Minor damage. Bent peg, bent clip-on and dented tank. I also have the Hi-per pro frame sliders. The slifer that touched down also slightly dimped the header on the right hand side. Anyways my problem is that under load at WOT (i.e I whack the throttle) the bike suffers from symptoms that look like vapor lock. The engine starts to die and to save it I ussually have to pullin in the clutch and bring up the revs. Now the weird thing is that the gas tank over flow is pissing gas at this point. I've check that the fuel pump is ok and I've ridden with the gas cap open and the same happens. Any suggestions anyone?

Default Carb problems

The dent in the header could be causing some exhaust flow problems...which could be in turn causing the throttle problem. How big is the dent? I would also check the floats in the carbs and make sur the choke is working properly. If you need a new header pipe, I have a set. Email me at macfartlane@cox.net

Hope this helps

Hey thanks for any info

The dimple in the header is very minor. I'll check
the float hieghts again...good idea. Ummm there is no choke...these are flatside carbs.

Have you checked the carbs to make sure they are seated in the intake manifolds? Last time I threw down my Hawk hard, the flatslides popped right off the engine. Just a guess.

Is the tank leaking, or the carbs?

I'll check the carb booties are snug. The gas is pissing out of the one of the tank outlets (on the under side of gas tank).

The tank leak is either your vent or cap drain, must have knocked one of them loose inside the tank when you crashed? I can't really come up with a correlation between the leak and the engine running rough, especially if you rode with the cap open. That eliminates a venting problem.

So I just swapped the gas tank out with an old beat one I have. Now I just have to charge the batt and take it for a ride. BTW the carbs were in snug in the booties

Hmmm the swapping the tank had no effect. However the battery is very weak. I'm starting to think it might be the battery.
