Default Used GSXR questions - mileage/age related

I have a potential trade for my car (it's posted in the classifieds).

It is a 2001 GSXR1000. The overall condition of the bike is pretty good. I am concerned about the mileage though. The bike has 35k miles. The bike is on its second owner. He has had the bike only for the last 3k miles. The previous owner had a good service history of the bike but I am concerned about things failing that a service might not address.

At 35k what should I look for on the bike that should have been replaced (besides chain, sprockets and tires)?

How long are the head stock bearings good for? Wheel bearings? Fork bushings? Clutch?

How should I inspect the bike? Should I cough up the cash for a Suzuki dealer to check it out? Do bike dealers have used bike evaluations?

Any help would be appreciated.

You can have safety check done on the bike @ your local dealer. If your in michigan i will do it for you for around 75. The dealer will charge about 125.

At that milege you should start to replace wheel bearing and rotating parts. The head stock should be checked but I really dont see it needing changed if the bike wasnt out in the rain much or in sandy salty climate. I would look @ the cush drive and how it shifts. The GSXR should shift kinda clucky. You should feel every gear when you shift into it. I have owned 6 GSXRs in my life and they all shift the same. Also listen to rattle in the head area, CCT was big problem with this bike. If it rattles stay far away from it.

If you need anything else let me know.

Thanks twisty. I might have some other questions. Like CCT? What is CCT?

I'm in Cincy otherwise I'd bring it to you.

I'm trying to get my car sold to buy your RC51 btw....

Don't let a little cam chain noise scare you away. Very easy and straightforward fix. Even replacing the cam chain is very easy on that model if needed. Stock tensioners had problems when the bikes were ridden real hard. Toss the stock tensioner and get an APE Manual tensioner...........$55....... Problem solved. That year 1000 was an excellent bike........I owned 2 of them and a couple of 02's which were the same bike basically. 40,000 miles with nothing major....just the usual wear parts and i did have to replace a regulator/rectifier once. If the deal is good.....I'd do it. If the bike is straight and not all thrashed....and at least runs halfway decent...you probably wont get hurt.

If the price is right, go for it. i rode an 01 from new until track day crash in 06 with not a single problem. was a race bike for a little while, street bike, track bike, street bike, and on and on. when i finally waded it up it was at 30k miles. Only mechanical engine things i did was a valve check at 25k, valves were almost perfect still, and put in a manual cam chain adjustor. thoes engines are damn near bulletproof. as for the other things like wheel bearings and crap like that. all of that is pretty cheap when considered. like i said, if the price is right, take it.

what is the right price?

I'm pretty sure it is less tahn 6k but for much less? The overal condition isn't rough but it isn't perfect either.

I was in the process of selling mine when it wrecked and I had it listed at 5k with a bunch of snags. Comsitcs were damn near pefect, had a hindle full system, PCIIIr, black powder coated frame, various gearing, etc. if its "rough" then i wouldnt pay more than 5k for it. its different on the coasts as far as price. in CO bikes dont sell for shit for some reason but that same bike on either coast will sell for about a $1000 more so. I would say no more than $5000.

Thanks.

How often do you need to adjust your cam chain with the manual adjuster?

Its not an easy fix if it has been like that for few thousand miles. Ill send you some pics of 2002 that the cam chain was not fixed for 6000 miles.

I have the APE CCT in all my bikes. I just check it every oil change or so.

It is an easy fix... replacing the cam chain/cam chain tensioner/or even the cams for that matter....are easy. Try it on a new CBR 600 RR.....That is NOT easy.

The APE;s only require adjusting every so often...like when you start hearing a little cam chain noise. They are also very easy to mis-adjust by over tightening...then your going to have some serious problems.
