My 05 999 set for 4 yrs (crashed) and I have put over 4000 hard miles on it this summer with the same belts that came on it. I turned 12000 miles this weekend on it and might change them this winter. I know where there are 2 998's that have never had the valves adjusted or new belts put on and they both have over 20,000 miles on them. They get abused at track days and all day riding adventures. Change oil every 2500 miles and put gas in it is all we have done to them. They still make great power considering what they have been through.

No kidding. Belts on cars can go 10 years or 150,000 miles. Gee I wih there was some definitive data as to how long we can run on them.

Change the belts every 12K or two years. If you can't afford it, sell the bike and buy a Suzuki. Sorry for the attitude but seriously, do it.

I don't think it a matter of being able to afford it at all--I think it's more a matter of not wanting to throw money away. The 916 that I bought in 2005 still had the original white lettered belts--they were 10 years old. I changed them to the kevlar red lettered belts back in '05 and are still running on them today. I'm going to be too busy messing with another project bike next summer, so I probably won't get around to changing the 916's belts to 2011. I'm not sweating it at all either......The newer belts are incredibly strong and I don't run the bike that hard.......

Ok, we'll look for your post on how to replace valves, piston etc... J/K . I've found, as I'm sure many others have that, crisis prevention is easier than crisis management.

I'd rather replace the belts than deal with this...

i got a appointment next week he told me about 300 for the service.
,,,, Yes it is TRUE on the 7,000 not the 2yr,remember mileage before yrs.Do not attempt to change them your self unless you know what you are doing,thiers more to it than taking this and that off.Ducati's need attention to service,thats part of owning the Ducati brand...Good Luck.
