New to Speedzilla - Question on Ducati "Values"
Hello all. New to Speedzilla here (well, joined a while back - just posting today) and had a question on valuation of Ducati motorcycles. I have a couple of Ducatis (M900 & 748R) and am considering selling the R but am unsure how the market determines the appropriate value of a particular bike. I know that "price is determined by how much one is wiling to pay", but more and more KBB-citers (who the hell is this Kelly chick anyway?) will refer to nothing but that reference. I, like most owners, probably believe that the bike I am selling is worth considerably more than what I know sellers will come at me with (KBB Bible in hand).
So I was wondering: Have any of you bought or sold a Ducati(s) OVER KBB-stated retail value and how did you come to that decision? Was it impulsive or was there a greater sense of value for that particular Ducati?
Thanks in advance for the insight...
Rick

Welcome
My personal experience has been that KBB has been on the high side of the price ranges, sometimes in the extreme. I have found that looking at similar bikes in the market (from many sources) is usually a good indicator of what the bikes are worth. But if you don't have to sell, then name whatever price you would like to get.
Looks like you have a nice clean bike with some great additions I am not familiar with the 748r market, as it is a little specialized, but $7,500-$7,000 give or take some sounds about right.

Right now its a buyers market. So if you sell TODAY, you're not going to find a buyer that easily and if you do find one, you'll be haggled down to $5k to sell it.
Guys like me with 848's are getting between 8,500 and 9k for our bikes... why would anybody buy an almost 10 year old 748R when they can get a 1 year old 848 for a few grand more?
Anyhow, its interesting times we live in. If you were to sell it now, you'd at least get some money, maybe in the future you won't get anything for it...
Good luck! Its a gorgeous bike! And KBB blows, don't go near it.

Unless you have to sell I would just keep it. Prices right now are so in the toilet it really is unbelievable. I've thought about selling my 999 for over a year and never got around to doing it last summer, now I would be lucky to get $7500 for it. That is over $10,000 off MSRP in 5 years.
If go to places like Apriliaforum their classifieds are filled with bikes of prices that would have been steals just last year. A cherry Futura or Tuono for $5k asking price? It just seems too low.
The big question is when things turn around whether these prices stay low or rebound. I am inclined to think the former unfortunately. There are just so many nice bikes with similar performance made in the past few years.
As sad as it is to say, your R probably have trouble bringing $7k. For what it is, it should be more.

Thanks all. After careful reconsideration (read: your valuable input and my unwillingness to get the shaft), I will be withdrawing any intentions to sell the R at this time. Actually, I got the R back yesterday from its 6K mi factory service. She got the royal treatment and is better than she ever was.
My Monster, on the other hand, still has a small oil leak. Gotta love them Ducs...

Wise move Rick. Your 748R is the cream of the crop for anyone looking for a slice of that Ducati history. I strongly believe some of the quotes here are off the mark a couple grand and to the right person its a deal where you had it priced. Its funny when you go out and spend over $2 grand just on the wheels, people just don't feel that adds true value to the bike. Now, if you were to take the wheels off and some of the other very nice mods and part them, then you can lower the price and sell it. Thats a more likely scenario. That makes up the difference real quick between $7K and $9K selling price. Still $7K for a mint 748R like yours is giving it away and I wouldn't do that. Keep that beauty and I think in the long run you'll be happy you did unless someone offers you a smokin deal like someone did on my 916. Besides, you dumped some real coin recently into the bike making it mechanically perfect, now you can enjoy it, not someone else.

In case you are curious about prices. I bought my 2001 748R (low mileage, about 2500, and pristine) for $10,500 last may
