Default SS 900 Engine year question

Can anyone tell me which year model 900SS/ Monsters had air only cooled (not air/oil cooled) cylinders?
Thanks in advance

According to the fiche, 900SS it was 98 that they switched to the newer air cooled style, but it seems like some 98 had oil cooled cylinders and some didn't. Would be curious to see it the F.E. bikes had them. Monster was 98 as well. I swear in those days they just used whatever they had handy.

The 900's were all oil/air cooled, with an oil-filled jacket around the back cylinder and a smaller capacity one around the more exposed front cylinder.
This is why they spew oil all around the workshop as you're carrying them to your workbench after lifting them off the engine...

The only real difference is when they internalized the oil cooler drain into the alternator cover, in 1996 or thereabouts.

Why ?

Default Why?

Hello D16RR: Are you going to de-stroke an engine? Shorter rods too? I took some measurements off an older set, trying to figure out how much could be removed safely. But I decided I needed about 12.5mm, and that was too much. Was thinking about trying to use with 750 parts; ie., 61.5 x 92mm. Thanks.

I bought a newer set off eBay from one of the parts vultures in the SE, but he sent me junk, and then told me I could hone the damaged front cylinder to make it work! We disputed, and I sent them back to him.

I've got an extra set of 2000-2002 cylinders they were for a project of mine that has gone another way...

If you're still looking for these, how does $250 sound?

I bought a 2001 900SSie in 2001. I remember the sales brochure saying one of the changes was that they switched to all air cooling from air/oil. If I remember correctly, the 98 (FE) and then for the new generation ‘99 was when they did away with external oil lines from the oil cooler to the cylinders. After 98 the oil was carried to oil jacket internally. In 01, they did away with oil completely. You can see the difference if you look at the size of the cooling fins on the 01 and up. The fins are much deeper because the oil jacket is gone.
