Default Mitsubishi Evolution thoughts?

Just curious if anyone here has one and would like to share their thoughts. The performance of one of these things seem incredible, 911 performance for around $35k brand new. 143hp/liter stock...wow.

Anybody?

Since your on this V-twin message board I feel you may be more suited towards a Subaru STi instead. They have a boxer (Porsche style) engine that has a nice throaty exhaust rumble compared to the Evo's inline 4. Think RC51 vs. 1000rr.
I road tested both before finally deciding on the Subaru. The STi build quality and performance felt better compared to the Evo. The Evo is still impressive but did'nt feel as refined. It reminded me of an old Nova with a big block. Very fast but its economy car roots still show thru. Just my

One other side note is the questionable future of Mitsubishi Motors in the US? They are the only Japanese car company losing money in the US and are on the verge of closing shop here.

Its what happens when you offer 6 year financing with 0% intrest. You dont see honda or toyota doing that, and just look at GM and ford. They doing worse and have offered the same deals in the past. Their creditors still charge them intrest so its a losing battle for them

Don't own either but have driven both...

Evo: High strung; handles like a go kart but rides like one too; big, big rush when it comes up on the cams and turbo at about 4K; econobox roots do show but still stiff and well-sorted; pushes a bit in tight turns but can be overcome w/ power. The race car of the two. Needs to be kept up in the revs to access its prodigious power.

STi: No replacement for displacement, meaning useable torque at lower RPMs (that is, more grunt around town); not so big a rush as the revs climb but still a big push all the way to redline; more compliant suspension on uneven pavement but a bit more lean in the turns; doesn't seem to push as much in tight turns. Has more of a daily driver feel but plenty of hustle. More user friendly than the Evo at 3k-5k RPM.

Personally I prefer the Evo, but it really makes no concessions to civility. It's also more "exclusive", if that's important. The STi is to the Impreza what the SRT-4 is to the Neon, and that's not a dis. I like the SRT. But the Evo is more like a Lotus Elise or an F40...it's just balls out, no frills. If it makes it heavier and/or doesn't make it go faster, the Evo doesn't have it.

I've had an STI for the last 2 years, and there's always the battle between the Evo and the STI, so basically we have covered all topics between those cars... its kinda like this

Evo pros:
-Very fast steering
-Excellent track-day car
-Excellent stock tires (Yokohama Advan A046s for the win)
-Excellent brakes (Brembo 4-pots front, 2 pot rear)
-Tight and precise tranmission feel (the 6-speed in the EvoMR especially)
-Tight suspension
-Extremely moddable engine (the inline-4 turbo 4G63 has been around for quite some time), you make good power with little money
-Excellent seats (those Recaros kick ass)
-Front mount intercooler less prone to heat soaking (compared to the STIs top mount IC)

Evo cons:
-Very harsh suspension for a daily driver
-Reliability issues galore (mostly premature clutch failures and excessive wear is what I've seen commonly)
-Noticeable turbo lag
-Low rent interior

I could talk all day about the STI, but you're looking for Evo info mostly. I do not have one, nor driven one, however we discuss about the Evo every single day in the STI boards and this is what comes out as conclusions most of the time

My 88 Shelby CSX had a better interior than the new Evo (at least the one I test drive). Also my CSX had more of a kick in teh pants, less turbo lag and cornered better. Then again thats comparing a stock Evo vs a completely race prepped (yet very close to not being street legal) Shelby CSX. BTW the Recaro's I had were much more comfy than teh ones in the Evo

My roommate has a 2005 Evo MR. it is an extremely nice car. the interior is pretty bare, but the recaro seats are super nice. his has the 6 speed so driving long trips is easier. it handels extremely well and has some hp under the hood. i have never been in an sti so i have nothing to compare it to. but my roommate drives his Evo everyday for over a year now, taken it on a coupe road trips and has even been known to "rally" it down farm/dirt roads around south texas and hasnt had anyproblems with it.

This should answer all your questions.

In my opinion the STI is a better car

Keep in mind that you're losing a good 20% of your driveline power to the AWD system. The performance isn't anything spectacular. It's a reasonably quick economy-car-made-rally-car. If you're in the market for said rally car for some reason, the WRX is a lot more fun when you uncork it of its emissions garbage. But, it's still slow as crap compared to a decent rear wheel drive GT car.

For what it's worth, a 911 Carrera will handily nuke and pave an Evo in just about any sort of real-world application (e.g. anything other than a snow-covered parking lot). It also has the added bonus of not looking like a misshapen glob of modeling clay.

I bought an 03 new..awesome, but the kids will always be harrassing you to race or checkin' it out when you come out of the store...freeked me out so I sold it(had my GNX stolen years ago in a similar way)
I put the sti heads up against it and bought the evo(heck I work for a company that makes all the SPT performance exhaust stuff) The Evo had a more comfortable interior...a radio for one, and did not ride that bad if you did hioghway driving(it was actually nice and firm, but not overly so) The sti drove like a truck, the streeing was numb, the shifter sucked. the turbo lag was not as bad as you'd think. The car did NOT like bad weather(tires) The one thing is that the cars are gonna die in resale value, we traded our $32k car with less than 10000 miles in and got $24k(and I beat them up bad) The 04 and 05 cars are much nicer in terms of resale as they have a market to judge now. I would buy another , and have been thinking of it in 06/07 unless the new r32 is a pos
