Default I'm looking to buy ...

Yeup,

The time has come to look at buying an MV.
The target bike is an F4S '00 unit with approx. 16,000 k's on the clock, two previous owners & a history of mechanial troubles.

The asking price is Aus$12k with a blown head gasket.
(The redbook private price is $14,4 - 17k)

So the following questions are:-
1. Is the bike really that much of a good deal ... It looks like a good buy to me from here ... but is the head gasket going to be a big issue?

2. How hard is it to change the head gasket on one of these (bearing in mind I'm a duke rider who doesn't usually have to deal with inline 4's)

3. Does anyone have a factory manual for an Evo 1 that they could either copy for me or tell me where I can get one?

I'm not sure about that one. I mean, if you're handy you can do the head gasket no problem. You can release the tensioner and take the cams out, and then get the head off without messing with the chain (I believe they were endless that year). I'm not sure how much a gasket cost, but I'm guessing it's not $2k Aus.

The '00 bikes had a few more nagging problems than the others. By '01 they seemed to be pretty reliable (I have an '01 and I watch for problems in others' bikes and there aren't as many).

I might hold out for another one if I were you.
