hello all,
have had some previous duc experiences and just picked up a 96 ss/cr in fine shape with 4600 miles. bike is running pretty rich and have searched unsuccessfully for OEM jetting. would like to check current jetting against OEM specs and move forward from there. maybe the PO had re-jetted for aftermarket pipes, then sold the pipes? - no idea.
have been reading the general ducati and SS posts in my spare time and appreciate this fine site. i only have a short list of intended mods (+3 rear, front re-spring and fork oil for my weight, an open cover) but you never know...............
have records of new belts, oil/filter, brake/clutch fluids from last May and intend on repeating again shortly (less the belts) soon. over the winter i'll check/lube the steering head, wheel and swingarm bearings, shock pivots and have bcm check the valves for me.
many thanks for any replies, i'll try to keep my ? few.

It was common for an otherwise unmodified bike to get the Stage1 Dynojet kit just to cure the factory lean condition, with the Stage2 kit came the airbox mod and slip-ons. So if the top of the airbox is cut off there's a good chance it's got a Stage2.
Thanks, it's a lot easier on the bum and wrists too!
Check the choke cable and make sure it's pushing the slide back all the way, I just had this problem on mine and had to fix this problem the shop created when they reassembled. If the jetting hasn't changed then maybe the plugs are too cold a range or possibly just old? Could also be weak coils, I believe those were a common point of failure, although mine haven't given me any problems yet. *knock on wood*
i planned on new plugs first, and i'll check the choke action if conditions warrant. right now she's a bit cold-blooded but warms up nicely, idles fine. very strong everywhere, and 6K rpm's is a hoot. i wouldn't mind a lower seat (if your seat provides that) as i'm a short little duffer. am also looking for a tank bra (no longer made by targa) 'cause i stuff myself pretty close to, and all over the tank.
Yeah the Corbin seat is lower and wider so it's much more comfortable. Takes the weight off your wrists too and makes you feel like you're part of the bike rather than riding on top of it.
PO said bike always turned over slowly, bought new battery - no help. i took off the ground cable spade connection at the frame (left side) and noticed paint was still on the frame. sanded off the paint, sanded both sides of the spade connector. also sanded the both connections/spades at the frame-to-engine ground cable (right side). zoom! starts right up.
also hooked up a battery tender.
the "running rich" question has been answered too. just needed to be run: after a 65mile cruise, plugs are fine.
am looking at a used corbin, but the underside is a little funky. did like the sargent seat with tool kit i had on the monster. we'll see what shows up.

thanks for the welcome. no need at this time for the cable upgrade, spins over nicely and starts well. PO was good to me, bike condition is nice and do appreciate the new battery!
am checking F/R sag this morning and think my first purchase will be F/R SS lines, along with shopping for a seat. i did find that Testors model glue #1180 is an absolute perfect match for the engine case color. (had a 1/4inch dia permanent stain on one of the cases - it's gone now.)

I highly recommend Sargent saddle if you're looking to get a good quality seat. I've had two of their seats and they were awesome. The staff took a lot of time with me determining exactly how I wanted mine built up and it turned out great.
Regards,
Jeff

I would concur with the above recommendation for the sargent seat . I can't imagine anything better . But alot of my height (6' 1"") is in my legs so the taller seat height really works for me . If your legs are shorter I's look for a Corbin .
I have a Sargent seat on my Duc, Corbins on my other bikes. If I had it to do over again, I'd put a Corbin on the Duc too. They're not for everybody, but I'm a Corbin fan. Oh, and a 6'2" one, so I don't think height is the determining factor.
Nothing wrong with the Sargent, it looks great and is much better than stock, but I think Corbins are a bit better looking and definitely, for me, more comfortable (after broken in, which takes quite some time).
hello and comments greatly appreciated. bike is running super and front brakes, after bleeding/flushing with DOT4, are much improved. after reading how much they sucked and having maint records showing recent service, assumed they were at optimal performance but was mistaken.
haven't done much really, other than removing all the panels and cleaning/checking/etc. removed the black zip-ties and replaced w/semi-clear; found perfect paint matches to touch up a few stone chips on the panels and a tiny stain on the left engine case; added 2 nice Agip decals (one to cover a small stain on the frame); checked the charging system (perfect) and added a tender; sanded all electrical connections; installed a 60w superbright headlight; checked belts/tension and generally fussed over this gorgeous piece of art.
just ordered a nichols kickstand bolt, and a 39t or 40t rear will be ordered friday (gotta decide). put a +2 on the m750 monster i had, wasn't enuff. went to +3 and very happy. to slow the steering, will be raising the forks a tad this weekend. turn-in is too quick for me. had a sargent seat on the monster and my 749, loved the quality and storage container. but the corbin looks a little lower which will be good for my ergos. am 5-6, 155lbs so it's quite a reach to the bars.
plenty of good reading on this site, most of my questions have been answered already. 1 year-old Ducati red belts are tensioned "old school", with 7mm clearance vert and 5mm clearance horizontal. am reading this may be considered loose per the new(ish) harmonic method. hope to stop in at BCM next month and ask what shade-tree mechanics usually do. i miss that place.
