Default 966 kits finally done (almost).

Well, it has been a LONG time coming, but I just picked up my cylinders from Millenium today. All that is needed is to clean them and install the freeze plugs which I have to order. I ended up going with the Mahle pistons (95mm) with a clearence of 1.5 thousandths using the external oil line cylinders (92-97). I have 9 kits available and will be posting on the message boards first and then (hopefully not), going through ebay. The price will be $970 with no core exchange and $830 with a core exchange. I definately thought that it would be cheaper, but the mahle pistons bumped up the price. However, it is still cheaper than buying outright (1100+ shipping). Shipping and payapl would be additional and if you live in Wisconsin you will need to add sales tax. I can be reached at michal.r.miller@hotmail.com or 920-233-4964.

PS.......I appologize for the wait and want to thank both
Bruce and Guy for all of my trouble.

Nice job! If I hadn't already done my 944 project I would definitely be sending an order your way. Hope everything goes in smoothly for you. Please post updates on how everything comes along.

Regards,

Jeff

I finished cleaning the cylinders and installed the freeze plugs today. I also forgot to mention in my original post that the cylinders were honed into clearance using a torque plate. I really hate going through ebay, so I am now listing these at $800 with core exchange and $930 w/o core. Let me know if you have any questions. Thanks. Mike

What's the advertised compression ratio with this kit ? Also have you weighed the Mahle pistons and compared them to the weight of the stock 900 cast pistons . I'm curious .

Thanks
Ron

I am not certain as to the weight of the stock pistons, but the mahles with wrist pins and circlips (no rings) weigh 417 Grams. The compression according to Guy is 12.75:1 when the squish is set to 1 mm.

OK thanks , I may be able to dig up a stock piston and weigh it for comparitive purposes . If I can I'll post the results . I was wondering how close they might be for crank rebalancing purposes .

A 2 valve Ducati with a single sparkplug will detonate at anything much over 10.5:1, a DS1000 can go to about 11.5:1 on pump gas, those pistons look under 11:1

I have a 2-valve single spark...does this mean this is not a bolt and roll deal, saying extensive tuning and other modification will be required in order for reliable riding?
p.s~ is squish
thanks

Squish, in essence, is the distance between your piston and the head when the piston is at TDC. The lower the squish, the higher the compression. The higher the squish, the lower the compression. I was told by Guy that I would need to run premium gas, but again, it would all depend on how much engine work you have done. The kit is a straight bolt on and the only thing that is required is that you check the squish to make sure you are at 1mm or more. As with anything, the more you do the better the performance will be (degrere cams, retard ignition, etc....). Hope that helps. Mike

I have all the tooling for dual plugging 2 valve heads. I've done probably 20 sets ,but I haven't done any heads for a while. Let me check with my machinist to see what his schedule is like and how much he wants these days.

I have 11:1 pistons (JE) in my 97 SS CR. I retarded the ignition timing about 3 degrees and I run 93 octane (R+M/2 method) - no pinging. (It would happily run on 87 stock, but no more....).

Power is nicely increased and I just filled up after "normal" riding and got nearly 50 MPG (with 41mm FCRs, K&N pod filters, Dyna coil, and Nichols flywheel). FUUUUUNNNNNN bike!
