Default Broken ring, scored cylinder

Digging into the 1997 900SS to see why it's burning oil.

Not too hard to figure out - pulled the horizontal cylinder (that's the one that was low on compression and oil-fouling plugs) and I find a broken oil ring and a scored cylinder - nice little symmetrical "column" of discolored metal that I can feel, slightly, with a fingertip.

Can these cylinders be rebored? Any idea how much that should cost? Do you then need oversized rings?

This is no doubt a self-inflicted wound....

Thanks all - BrianK

Time for a 944 kit.

Send em to Millenium Technologies with some new pistons and have them bored and replated.

Thanks Ducman, but the thing has relatively new 11:1 stock bore pistons in it now - it was probably during the install that I screwed up a ring without noticing it (had a couple of "redo's" and probably lost patience and began rushing things....FCRs, lightened flywheel, DynaCoils - plenty o' power already. I really don't want to invest that much more in it. Thanks - Brian

probably be cheaper to find a new used set, or to pick up a used 900 motor. boring and replating nikisil cylinders is expensive

I will be hopefully sending my cylinders off to millenium in the next month. You can see my previous threads about getting a group buy for custum pistons. I ended up going in with Guy and ordered 10 sets of the 95mm pistons (whould be done at the end of the month). I have 10 sets of cylinders that I will be getting bored and plated. Millenium is going to give me a price break for that qnty, so if you just want a plating, that should not be an issue. Call them for a price quote and then I can get a quote from them for an additional cylinder just for the plating/honing. Once I get all set, I will be posting the kits.

Mike
