Default Reinstalling the fuel pump & gas cap assy?

The fuel pump fuse blew on my 900sp during two track days. The bike ran fine at a moderate pace (and no problems on the street) but the fuse blew when I started pushing it harder. Thinking that vibrations were causing a problem with the wiring I took out the fuel pump to troubleshoot but found no problems. What I did find after putting it back together was fuel coming out at the connection between the pump & filter. Replaced the line and clamps but it's still 'leaking' so now I'm thinking that's not the problem. Pretty clever, eh? There is fuel coming out of a metal tube in the upper part of the tank so I'm thinking it could be spray from that but it sure looks like it's coming from the fuel line. I haven't had any fuel related problems prior to this which makes me think this all may be normal.

One other thing...I can't seem to get the gas cap assy back on. I put grease around the o-ring per Haynes manual but it won't sit flush with the tank. there's about an 1/8" gap. Took out all the set screws and tried persuading it with a rubber mallet but I don't want to damage the tank.

Sure would appreciate some suggestions

It took me 2 hours to get gasket perfect to put fuel cap back. You need to stretch gasket til it fits on outside of cap. Then hold it all around so it does not flip down on you. Then put it on tank before it flips... Very frustrating. No were in amnual did it show this... If you have any other questions, I'll try to explain....

after getting gasket on....

It's a bitch. After never being able to seat the gas cap base properly when replacing my fuel filter, I finally gave up and trimmed a bit off the rubber gasket with a scissors (underneath where it doesn't show) and I now install it after the gas cap is on. Works really well and is holding up after more than a year (1997 SS/SP). And by the way, I don't think there should be fuel coming out of any hoses or pipes inside the tank.
