Default older SS for touring

Just took a 700 mile trip up into Montana (do they have speed limits up there?) on my 1997 SS/SP and it was awesome! 80-90 mph all day, comfortable and ran like a charm. I put on a mag RKA tank bag, some RKA saddlebags and a rear seat bag, and a Throttle Boss and had a ball. This is also my trackday bike... talk about versatility! The new ones may have fuel injection and have been redesigned to look more modern by Terblanche (not necessarily good), but the pre-1999 SS is a wonderful beast!

Ditto. I may buy another bike(S!) down the line, but the ss/sp is a keeper! Miles of smiles...

How exactly does the Throttle Boss work? I've looked it up on the net and still can't figure it out (I've never seen one in person). Would it be able to work with bar end mirrors?

Since I took my first ride on my 750 sport, I thought that it had great potential as a sport tourer. The only problem was the riding position, but I shaved the seat down about 1.5 inches and put some HeliBars on it and now I can ride nearly all day without a problem.

Heli bars definitely do the trick for extended rides on the old Supersport. I added a Sargent saddle and a Zero Gravity windscreen as well, to make it as comfortable as possible. I just love the bike and never get tired up making upgrades to her!
Throw on a set of FCR's and you will even see 50 mpg cruising on the highway.

Regards,

Jeff

Throttle Boss (and other brands) is a rubber piece that wraps around the throttle and lets one push with the palm to open the throttle instead of turning it with the fingers. Helps a lot with numb/claw hand. Should work fine with bar end mirrors. Jeff, I couldn't believe it, but I got 55mpg at those speeds (although my FCRs may be a teensie bit lean at cruising speed throttle opening). I have a Sargent saddle too, and CycleCat bars, which really improve the comfort.

Totally agree with all the sports touring fixes. FCRs, helis, corbin, throttle rocker, double bubble, RKA. Really makes it an all day machine. Some folks over 6'2" may disagree but for me, it works. The other item I really have enjoyed are the mirror extenders. Pretty ugly but they work great. No downside at speed.

I'm also going to try the Laminar Lip this fall and see if it helps the wind protection any.

50-55mpg is what I get too with the FCRs.

92-97 SS make great all rounders, fast enough for a sane sunday morning ride and they can be used for sport touring with a tank bag and some throwovers. myself I'm lookin foward to DFS a nice easy 600mi. day to getthere then a couple of nice days riding around north Ga.and home again should be about 1500mi. for a 4 day weekend in my opinion the 92 -97 SS is one of the best bargans out there.a true do all bike.

Totally agree,

I have ridden a variety of bikes, but the ol’ carbatooted SS’s just fit me perfectly (6’2”). I once rode my 600SS from London to Firenze (Florence in Italy, about a thousand miles I believe – can’t be sure, the speedo cable broke on the ferry across the Channel...) with out a sore bum. I think the power delivery is just spot on, and the handling so friendly - makes for easy and rapid cruising.

So of course I’ve got a 900 Superlight V now (600 is now a 674 trackbike – I’ll never sell her) and a pair of FCR’s from Chris K in a box in the garage... this weekend I’ll be a tinkering . I hear you boys really rate them?!

Max.
