Default HC piston on a 944 SS carb: what sparkplug use?

A pal of mind has a 900/944 SS with HC piston.
he uses OEM plugs.
When he accelerates a little bit fast to the throttle, a kind of sound like "click click" seems to come from the heads. (In french, we call that "clicketis", unwanted detonations in the head, but i don't find the word in english)
Could it be relevant of a bad choice of plugs?

if you're talking about pre-detonation, higher octane gas should do the trick. Also, did your friend retard the timing on the bike with the 944 kit?
