Default Exhaust question for '98 FE

Hey all

I'm looking to ditch the stock exhuast. As you know the 98FE has stock highmounts. While shopping around I see listings for "up to '98" as well as "98-00" and "98-up". What's correct? Are they mistaken or can I use the exhaust from newer SS's as well? I'm looking to go low mount unless anyone has a reccomendation for himounts that accept pass pegs.

PS: If you have one for sale to fit my bike give me a shout!

Thanks guys! You Rock!

Cliff

Up to 98. The 98 and on type are for SSie's.

Actually, the "'98 and on" models are NOT the same. Rather, 1998 was the last year for the carbed SS, your "FE" model. 1999 was the first year for the Terblanche-styled, injected "SSie". It's usually just a lack of grammar when you see "98-up". That should mean model years 1998 and up, inclusive. I think what most mean is after '98, or '99-up.

The break is 1992-1998 and 1999-current. Most parts that will fit any of the carbed bikes will fit all models from 1992 through 1998. There may be brackets or hangers or whatever you need to buy, but the basic bike (frame, mounting lugs, engine, etc.) is the same.

I have a 98FE. you will needa pre 98 exhaust. I had someone try to convince me that a 98 pipes would work.

The '98 FE does indeed have high mounts stock and this does present a problem because it's slim pickens for pre '99 SSs high mounts. Talked to someone at the MotoGP, he was going to take his FE stockers to Kerker and see if he could get a one off. You could always have them cored but that may not do it for some it the looks department.

Thanks for the input.

So due to the stock highmounts, do I need to change the whole pipe to a 91-97 pipe when going to an aftermarket slip on? Or is the rest of the pipe the same?

the header pipes are the same. you only need slip-ons.

Cliff:

If you're looking to do the monoposto to biposto mod to the FE (as in your other post), the header itself is the same and doesn't need to be replaced. All you need to do is replace the OEM high mount cans with low-mount slip on cans and passenger pegs.

The reason why slipons for the 900ssie bike will not fit the carbed 900ss bike is that the mounting locations (from the pipe to the passenger peg) is different. The 900ssie pipes and cans will technically slide in to the 900ss headers but you'll have a hard time mounting them on the bike - unless you create your own mounting brackets.

This is what I did:

The confusion between when the 900ss went from carbed to fuel injection stems from the fact that the change happened at different years in different parts of the world.

In the USA, the carbed 900FE was 1998 model year bike and the Terblanche 900ssie was a 1999 model year bike.

In the rest of the world, the carbed 900FE was a 1997 model year bike and the Terblanche 900ssie was a 1998 model year bike.
