Default Weird Starting Issue

So I took the CR for a nice rip through some of the curvies yesterday with a friend on a 748. We pulled over so I could make a biohazard break, I zipped back up, threw on the rest of the gear, turned the key, pressed the starter and -zip-. Headlight, instrument panel, everything went black.

Checked battery connections, and every connection I could get to. Checked all the fuses. Turned the key again, and back on came all the lights. This time it started, but with a good hesitation before the starter motor turned.

In my experiance, if a solinoid goes, it simply wont start, but I've never seen it shut off the lights and the dash. Considering the stock one has close to 40K on it, I figure its due for replacement anyways. But does anyone have any insight into the weird dash problem? I'm going to tear the front end apart tonight and check all the connections.

Just... weird. Bloody Ducati and their electrics.

Maybe a ground pulling enough current off the system to drop the relays that had been energized to power up the lights and other stuff???

Possibly... I did hear a weird "fizzle" type noise up front when I'd click the starter before.

I'll check it out. I'm just not sure. Wiring/electrics is my weak point

When talking electrics, a "fizzle", is generally a bad sound! Not as bad as a fizzle accompanied by smoke though

Good luck!

Didn't Snoop Dogg trademark "fizzle"? ...or was that "fa-shnizzle"?

Had a similar problem with my Monster. Symptoms were no juice when key turned on, juice returned after repeatedly turning key on and off. Turned out to be the main relay.

we've had a few issues lately with the ground cables at the engine - bolts lose, but not obviously so causing non starting.

if everything went dead it's a big open circuit caused by load or a bad battery.

Yea, its weird. I reproduced the problem last night, and its difficult to really determine.. I'm still leaning to a solinoid, but the noise is coming up front where all the wiring is.

Turn the key, thumb the starter. I hear a "click" (solenoid) and then I hear what sounds like a high pitched buzzing noise (higher and louder than the fuel pump) and the lights/dash go out. Its just weird. I'm not hugely worried about it, simply because I could always pop start it if I get stranded. But its an electrical issue I've never seen before. Usually in my experiance with the older Duc's, if there is a electrical problem, its either the Reg/Rec, Solinoid, Battery, or a fuse. Never seen anything like this.

Something tells me that the wiring diagram, a voltmeter, and I are going to get REAL intimate. Again.

if the electrics seem to be ok, have you checked the sprag clutch and starter motor itself? Would not necessarily explain why the lights and such go out.

look at the stud on the starter if you havent done so yet. Water tends to trap in the boot and rust the crap out of the connection. I cut a small drain hole at the lowest point and put some grease on there too. The sound you describe makes me think of one of the big cables (ground or+) The ground is easy to reach and check, it only has 2 sides. The + side has two wires (frm the Batt to the starter realy and from the relay to the starter. Check those first.

Interesting response Rick. I took mine apart over the winter and found it to be exactly as you describe (40K miles here folks). Also, not sure if it was mentioned, but are your battery connections snug and clean? I mean real clean, no corrosion at all. I had similar problems and that's all it was, a loose f'n connection.
