Default Magnecor wires & 2005 800SS

I ordered (because of reading posts on this site) a set of magnecor ignition wires. They were listed as up to 2003............ I assumed (I know........) they would work on my 2005, since it is the same design. They did not work. The set I got from Magnecor are a heavy-duty plug in type connection, and the factory ones twist in. Anyone have any ideas? Did Ducati change the coil design between 2003 and 2005? Should I get a new set of coils, or just send the wires back and get some listed for the 2005 from somewhere else? Thanks.

Post pics of the coils. I thought the 800SS coils were the same as the '99+ 750/900 coils. If so you should have no problems with those working. I have Magnecor coils on my '99 900SS and they plugged right in.

Okay this might be related. When I went to my local bike shop I got a pair of plugs. But when I saw caps that were twisted, not like my regular round pop in type, I returned the plugs. After going back later, I was telling the guy who was working there about my problem. He told me that ducati has normal threaded plugs, but there is a nub that is a female piece that twists on top of the threaded plug to make it look like a normal plug. I didnt check it out myself though. If someone can aknowledge this, then the solution to your problem would be to get some female nub piecesfor your plugs.

it's not the plugs, it's the coil that has the wrong connection type.

Yep... Those look different. Are they stock? You can sort of see my coils in this pic. It's an '01 900

redduck...... yes, they are stock. i wouldn't be against buying some aftermarket ones for a reasonable price, if there was any better performance, and i wouldn't have to send these wires back. thx.

Reports of increased performace differ based on who is talking about it. Early Monsters with the small coils are supposed to notice a difference, but the rest of the later models not so much since the OEM coils are decent already. My bike has the same coils as the '01 SS shown, but although yours are different it sure looks like those Magnecors will work. Pull off the OEM plug wire and give it a try. BTW, the OEM wire is the thick black one...

Not sure about aftermarket coils. I do remember a thread about adapting a set of Dynacoils to a late model SS. Maybe do a search. As far as performance gains, I think there may be some small gain in hotter coils if you have a modified engine. The gain wouldn't be in HP as much as it would be better throttle response. Your coils are probably more than good enough. I do have one of those New Volt ignition amps on my bike. I was able to open the plug gap to 1.5MM. The spark looks like it's from a freaking arc welder! I did feel a little difference in crispness after the install, but many argue a set of hotter coils will do the same thing for a lot less $. More than likely, that is very true. Anyway.... Those wires look pretty cool... If you need to unload them, IM me!

nick,

i did pull off the OEM plug wires, it doesn't have the same connection that is shown on the magnecor wires. the factory ones just push/twist into the coil.......

Can you post a pic of the OEM plug and receptacle on the coil?

Quickdraw, I have your same coils and wanted to get the Magnecors also. Can you just cut the end off the Magnacor wire and then screw it down into the factory coil?? Seems like it would work, but I'd hate to ruin a nice set of wires just to try it out...Just an idea.

well, i somewhat answered my own question..... if you go to the evolutionzone website, they list a set of wires for square coils, and round coils (like i have). i guess i'll call magnecor and see what they say. i'll keep you informed.

ok, here's the scope. they have a different part number (listed in their catalog and not the website) for the 2004-2005 800 supersports. the phone guy said i can send them back the ones i have and get the 7mm ones that would fit into my coil without a connection, or cut off the connection on the ones i have and shave down the cable to 'make' them fit (the red ones are 8.5mm)..... now the delimma, i don't want to send them back, because the 7mm ones that fit are black, so do i start chopping up my new $50 ignition wires, or can i buy some 98-02 coils and replace those? thx.

There is really not too much to ignition wires. I would cut them.

Yea, I wouldn't think cutting the connector off that one end and trimming the insulation off just enough so it screws down in the coil would not be a big deal. I'd definately try that first before going through all the hassle and cost to get/try new coils. Please let us know how it works if you do decide to try trimming the wires to work though!!

well, after some inspiration from you all, it is complete............. here is the picture:

not to brag, but i believe they came out pretty good. i pulled the magnecor wire from the factory coil connection, trimmed the insulation down with a razor blade, and twisted it on. Ageispolis was right, the plugs are also different, so i used the ducati factory plug connection with the magecor wires. i hope the NGK iridiums i have on order are the same as the factory plugs.

galaxy - if you are planning on getting some, i would just call magecor and see if you can get just the cable for a cheaper price.... just an idea.

Thanks guys.

Yout iridiums from ngk should be DCPR8EIX. Those are the same plug that came in your 800 (champion RA4HC) 16mm hex size, 12mm bore, 19mm depth, same heat range, resiter type plug, and a .8mm gap(bit bigger, but this is ok, manual claims .6-.7 spec)

I was wondering about upgrading hte plug wires.....I'm guessing it's worth it on the SS?

and that the magnecor wire is the way to go?

Quickdraw, I understand what's going on with the coil end of the new wires but what did you have to do or change on the spark plug end? Was something not right? Did they not fit the plugs the way they came from Magnecor?
