Default 2002 900ss come with beefier swing arm?

So I just got a new (to me) bike. It's a 2002 900SS.

I'm wondering if those came with the beefier swing arm from the factory? The bike has a 180 rear tire....I was under the assumption that these bikes came with a 170 rear tire?

I've got the marchisini (sp?) wheels on there (assuming that these are stock too?) and the Ohlins rear shock....

does someone have a spec listing for this bike for what it came with from the factory?

coming from my 01750 sport this is a TOTALLY different bike. I wasn't expecting there to be SO many differences. Needless to say, for $6500 and 4100 miles, I'm plesantly surprised!

Traditionally, the CRs came with steel swingarms & the SPs came with aluminum ones. They should both be plenty strong, but the aluminum one is quite a bit lighter. Very early SS aluminum swingarms ('92-'93?) had some cracking issues.
I'm not sure if the 2002 models still came both ways or not.

The 2002 900 SS came with an aluminum swingarm, while the 2002 900 Sport (Dark) came with a steel one.

Both bikes had a 170/60 ZR17 stock on the rear.

ok - so the 180....how will it affect handling?

is it worth going back to a 170?

Either tire works fine, I use the 180 bcause of the tire selection. the 170 may steer a little quicker? If so, I couldn't tell.

There's the link to Ducati's page that shows all the stuff about the 2002 SS's. You can download the parts catalogues/owners manual/etc. from there, very helpful info to have.

The 2002 900ss's were the first model to come stock with the reshaped aluminum swingarm that is still used on the new 1000ds's. Previously that swingarm was available through Ducati Performance as part of an upgrade kit for other Supersports.

It was also the first year (I think) that 5-spoke aluminum Marchesini's came on the SS. Previously it was the 3-spoke Brembo's.

The 900 is a great engine, and when you figure in the Ohlins shock, adjustable forks, dry clutch, etc., is a really great package and quite an upgrade from the 750.

Nice deal on the bike too! I'd suggest having a dealer look it over to make sure there aren't any outstanding maintenance issues needing immediate attention if there's one anywhere close that you trust. I'm sure you'll love the bike though!!

so far I'm absolutely giddy about the bike...lol

I do plan on having a dealership look it over, but first I'm taking in my 750 to have them look at that crack on the flywheel side engine casing....I want to get that thing in tip top shape so I can sell it....

looking over the 900 I don't see any wear on anything, the belts might need to be changed since they are still stock, and the first valve adjustment might need to be done here in a few weeks....

other than that I just need to change the oil!

the dealership that we use is Ducati Austin, they are about 2 hours away, so it means leaving hte bike with them for a while if we take it over to them, unfortunately.....

Normal mileage for the belt change is 12,000. Assuming the 600-mile service was done, valves can wait until 6000, at which time the belt tension should be checked / adjusted as well.

Congratulations on the new steed. I have a 750 myself and would also like to upgrade. I think I'll wait for some used 1000s to come on the market though. Maybe then I won't spend piles of time and money trying to get a few more ponies out of the thing.

Please post some more on what you think of your 900 - riding impressions and such.

yeah - maybe I should clarify what I mean by saying soon....lol

I'm already at 5k miles on the bike....

when I say I ride A LOT, I mean A LOT on a regular basis....like a thousand miles a week.....

all the service should be the normal ducati service for a 2v air cooled motor.....which is as you say and as I mentioned....

12,000 miles OR every 2 years on the belts....

the normal valve job is every 6k miles....

I'm absolutely loving the bike

it's a big change from the 750 sport.....

all of the changed and additions make a BIG difference in the way I feel on the bike....it's just confidence inspiring....on the 750 I had about a half of an inch on either side of chicken strip....within the first day on this thing I'm down to almost none...lol

granted it is a bigger tire, but still.....I just feel like I can lean the bike further and feel comfortable doing it....not to mention the added braking over the sports lame braking...lol
