Default Crankcase breather leak

The hose that attaches to the breather valve ontop of the crankcase has leaked a bunch of oil.I got about a 1/2 turn easily out of the clamp. Is this a common thing?Any maintainance of the collection tank or related plumbing that needs to be tended to? 2002 900 sport,6,000km.
Ric in Waterloo Ontario.

Default Re: Crankcase breather leak (Wingboy)

There really shouldn't be enough oil coming out of that breather to cause a leak. If any at all, you may get a "misting" of oil. A few things can cause a lot of oil to come out of that breather. The most common reason for us 2V owners is over filling the oil. It should be between the upper and lower marks of the sight glass while the bike is held upright. The other possible problem is excessive blow by in the engine which could be caused by poorly sealing piston rings.

Seeing as how you have a low mileage fairly new bike, I would guess the oil is or has been in the past, over filled. There is no normal maintenance for the oil collection system, but if you have oil coming out of the hose, I'd say it may be a good idea to pull everything apart and clean it out. After it's clean and back together, make sure your oil is at the correct level. If you're still having problems, do a compression check and/or leak down check to see if your rings are good.
