Default Does this clutch make my a$$ look big

No Seriously, what do you guys think of my clutch besides that fact that she's do for some repair/replacement. Do you think I can get another season; ~6K out of her?

It's very loud.. and that I don't mind, in fact I kinda like it. And the thing hasen't missed a beat yet. No slipping to date.

How many miles to you have on it? I got about 14K out of my clutch before replacing it, and yours doesn't look nearly as bad as mine did. You could probably get another season out of it, but it will continue to get noisier as the indents in the basket get deeper and the gap between tangs and basket increases. When you do replace it, go for the Barnett aluminum clutch pack, it's a little bit quieter, and a lot lighter, definitely worth the money. If you don't want to spring for an aluminum basket at the same time, you can always find a lighter weight drilled steel basket. I got one out of a 748R that is a little lighter than the stock one but not a ton. The combo of aluminum plates and steel basket is fairly quiet compared to the steel/steel setup, but still makes a good bit of sound. Someone who has the al/al setup could comment on the noise and performance.

the bigger the gaps, the louder it'll get. but if it's not slipping, there's no reason to swap it unless you want to upgrade to lighter parts. even if the tangs get mushroomed a bit, you can pull the clutch pack, file the tangs down a bit, give the friction plates a light sanding, and keep on pluggin.

Blue: The ole' girl has 20+K on her right now. I've been thinking about going all "mental" on my case like I've seen a few others around here doing. Then I would like to get new basket, clutch, and P.Plate. Just it's not in the cards for this year.. I've got too many suspention issues to work out. I'm thinking about just drilling the cover and painting the plate to give it a touch of custom look.

And Stati: I hear you on the file down the tangs, but what's the best procedure for sanding up the plates? what grit? and how rough do I want them? I pulled a bunch of them and didn't see any real glazing, like i'd thought I'd see.

Thanks again.

Here's another pic of the ole' girl before her tank was pulled.

I just did exactly what you described. I vented the case, painted the basket and pressure plate, and drilled the cover. it turned out pretty good, but if I had to do it again, I'd probably just send the case to fox performance. For $75 it would have saved a lot of hassle and probably would have turned out better. I'll take some pics to show you how it turned out and put them up later.

My clutch has about 39K miles on it. Loud as a mofo.

I thought about R/R, but Ill wait until it starts to slip. I already followed strati's procedure once. Prolly do it again while she's apart anyway for valve adjustment and swingarm bearing regreasing.

Zina's 95 9oo ss/cr went some 45000 miles with the original clutch ... and then we sold the bike! It just was loud as all heck.
