Default Anyone tried Dyna coils?

I'm considering a set of Dyna coils for my next upgrade to the 98' 900 CR. I bought a set of FCR's from Chris K. last year, so I already trust that the guy knows his stuff and sells parts that really work. The coils aren't really a necessity at this point and I also have to spend $ on a tune-up, chain, sprockets and maybe a battery...and the girlfriend likes to out. I've been eying the coils for a while though, and was wondering if anyone has installed them and what they thought, particularly if they help the Duc start a little easier since the FCR's don't have a choke. Thanks for the input.

Regards,

Jeff

Jeff, I have FCR 41s on my 1997 900 SP. I added Chris's Dynacoil and spark plug wire kit. Nice kit, but I really could not tell that it made much difference; maybe it starts a bit easier, but I never have much problem starting. Maybe a little crisper throttle response at low RPMs? Not much bang for the buck, in my opinion.

Jeff,

Although I haven't bought the FCR's, yet, I did get the Dyna's and with the stock carb's I noticed an improvement overall. Idle and start were much easier and, as Joe alluded, the throttle response is crisper. I've always been of the opinion that 'tweaking' the ignition system is worth the money.

The other advantage is that I can use 'standard plug wires'.

Cheers

i fitted green dynas to our 600m when a std coil died. it runs better when cold and maybe a bit better down low i think. i tried opening the plug gap from 0.6mm to 0.9mm too, but it didn't like that.

Jeff,
I've got a 97 900ss/sp with the same mods and a couple of more, as Joe B. On my bike it did make a very noticeable difference. Before installing the coils the bike was very hard to get started and took forever to get warmed up. It did not have a whole lot of punch either. After adding the coils the bike fired up instantly and I didn't have to fart around with the throttle waiting for the bike to warm up.
I also noticed a significant improvement in gas mileage.
I may have noticed the change more than Joe did because I installed the coils first then added the carbs, header system, etc.
If you have not done anything major to your bike yet, my guess is you will see a significant change with a set of new coils, wires , and plugs.
In my opinion for what it's worth, I am very pleased with the results.
