Default Swingarm Conversion

I cringe to post this because I am sure it is here but I searched for an hour and couldnt find it. What all is involved with doing the single sided swing arm conversion on the 2v motor? I want to use the 99x or 916 swingarm not the ferber I believe kit. I know you have to machine the cases or something but I am not sure on the specifics. Thanks a bunch.

good - grind the cases a little on each side of the mount point...pretty easy
bad - rework the frame shock mount point to work with the SSSA (Single Sided Swingarm Assembly), in other words the SS swingarm and the SSSA of a SBK have different mount points on the frame...not too bad if you can weld or can out source it
ugly - SSSA is shorter than the SS swingarm so handling could be off...I don't know that much about motorcycle handling charactistics so...

Try search again, but this time for SSSA. And make sure you choose the 'Search in>> Post Bodies (Return a post listing, slower)' option. More info there.

Several people have done this on the Monster. Check on the Monster board, I know that Norm, who posts there regularly, has done it several times.

Good call, Norm is where I got most of my info. You will see his name a lot when you try another search.

Also I'm in the process of installing a SSSA on my 620 engine, but I'm also mounting said 620 into a SBK frame, so it is easier and no geometry issues. But still have to do the grinding the cases bit. I will hopefully have some pics up on sunday or monday. It might give you a better idea.

well... I am actually curious on a couple of things I saw with your conversion... you said you can grind the engine cases down... but it doesnt look as if it lines up with your frame. What about re-installing the needle bearings. Do they just press back in or what? I dont want to do the sbk frame conversion I am just curious. If you are doing the conversion but not with the SBK frame then which swingarm pivot thing are you supposed to use... the SS one or an SBK one. Are they the same diam.? What about securing the pivot? Does anyone have a really detailed write up on this? Thanks guys.

Thats my engine and frame... Jager has good taste in projects...lol...

My engine was from a 99 supersport there must have been some difference in the way the cases were made or something.

The big problem with putting a SSSA on a SS is that the suspension setup are completly different. The SBK's use a link type suspension and the SS's dont. The monsters are a lot closer to the SBK's as far as the rear suspension goes.

A company in Italy by the name of febur makes a "bolt on" kit for a single sided swingarm for supersports, but it costs a lot of money.

Well... I am planning on making a custom frame for this bike anyway so that really is a non issue... it is going to be based off of the monster frame as well so that should be a bit of help. I can steal the shock rocker mount thing and various other parts off of it. Take care.

Milling down the engine cases is a fairly big project. Some people cut the swingarm itself, but if you do, you'll need to add frame supports to the outside of the swingarm axle. When I've milled the cases, I punch out all the swingarm bearings & grind the inner lip off soo that I can still install 2 per side.
The upper shock tower isn't that hard & is totally hidden, so if it doesn't come out as a thing of beauty, it doesn't matter. You'll also need a custom exhaust & this can be as big of a project as you make it.

Wow Mr. 908ssp... how would you do it the first time? I would rather ask questions before I start so it doesnt get messed up but what the hay, I guess I'll just start cutting and screw it up. I am not going to modify the swingarm, I just wanted to know about installing the bearings. As far as the exhaust goes... I am making it as simple as I can... just dumping two pipes right behind the engine. I gotta find a couple of iddy biddy mufflers. Norm, I am going to definately hit you up. If you can... when you post pictures show me some views of the cases with the machining done and without bearings, with the bearings installed, and with the swingarm installed. If you dont have the frame installed that would be the same set up as I am going to basically have isnt it? With the frame installed are you going to be relocating the swingarm further back in the engine case or how does that work since it looks to be about a quarter inch off. Take care.

You can use the 9*6 premufflers for your "itty bitty" mufflers, but don't expect much noise reduction. The bearings are inside the cases, so there isn't much to show, & the swingarm bearings are complete in their stock position. The only conversion I have here is my black monster, & it's complete, so I can't show you any step by step pics. All you need to get started is the measurement of the inside of the swingarm so you can cut the cases. If you don't have one already, buy a 9*6 swingarm off Ebay. You'll need the complete unit including shock & linkage, price should be aroung $350. If you just want a bare swingarm, I've got a couple here that you can have for $100 (per), I use the guts for the SSS tubular units that I make & always have leftover stockers.

O I am sorry... I guess I misunderstood... I thought you were cutting the cases and stuff on your 2v in the SBK frame conversion. My mistake. I already have the entire rear swingarm assembly on its way minus the brake caliper and shock on its way. I have to figure out the rear suspension but I cant do that till I have everything mocked. Is there an advantage to using the rocker over having the shock mount direct to the frame like on the SS? Ok thank you.

With a hint or two from Alex, the mount point on the cases were milled into more of an oval shape. The frame, SSSA, and engine all bolt up nicely now and the group is rock solid. Alex pointed out that the cases don't bear the load of the swingarm like the cases do on the SS or M swingarm setup. There are no roller bearings in the cases on the SBK setup, they are all in the swingarm itself. So here is a pic of everything bolted up. I'm just in the mockup stage ATM, I still need to disassemble, grease, and reassemble everything. I'm in the process of building so I don't have many pics. Once I start the reassembly process I'll shoot lots of pics. Already started work on the airbox mockup, mix and pour foam is cool shit.



Do think about what Alex said though. This is much more work than I anticipated (I thought it was going to be hard but...) and there have been issues/problems/set backs with everything I have tried to do. But that just makes days, like yesterday, when you solve problems really rewarding. You just have to make sure that you are not creating more problems when you are trying to solve another, problems which could easily ruin your engine/frame/etc (which is very easy to do). It is an awesome learning experience, just take it slow and you will probably be alright. Let me know if you have any questions. And like Norm told me, it will make a lot more sense when you start looking at the SSSA and the cases close up, it did for me.

I've looked at this, and walked away. While I've got a 'machine shop' in the garage, I'm not experianced enough at any of it, to start milling the cases. On top of the fact that a mistake can mean serious problems, I'd much rather leave trick mods like this to the people with the resources and time to do it right.

Ryan, I wouldnt bother. Nothing 'bolts on', and there are LOTS of custom-one-off parts your going to need to mill, drill, shape, and trim.

Thanks, I have updated a few things in my winter project topic, which is 10 or so down from the top of the SS section. Mostly stuff about the dry clutch conversion though. The swingarm conversion is finished.
