Default Fuel filter

I figure after 27k miles, it's time to change the fuel filter on my '99 750SS. Will it take a specific filter from Ducati or can I use a generic one? If anyone has used a generic one, what size do I use?
Thanks

No problem... One thing though, just check to be sure the filters for the SBK and the SSie are the same part number. I am pretty sure they are though. That thread was off the SBK side and they were discussing a 996. I just got the Ducati filter when I did mine. I'll be changing it again at the next valve check interval, I may go with one of the less expensive filters then. Ducati must really like their filters for what they charge for them!!!

There's a BMW dealer about 45 miles from here that had Ducs until about 3 years ago. They're friendly enough that I could call and ask if the BMW filter will fit and prob even tell me how to put it on. Do I have to access the tank from underneath like the 996 or do I go in from the fuel cap?

I don't know about the Ducati part #... but I used the Napa 3032 filter listed in the Desmotimes book and it worked perfectly.

No access underneath. You have to pull the cap off by removing the three top allen heads (the others are fake, open the cap and will see which ones). There is one allen head inside the cap too. After you lift off the locking cap, the easy part is over... Inside along the edge of the bezel are several very tiny allen head set-screws. After you remove all the little allens, you have to pull the bezel off the tank. This can be a bit of a pain! Keep working at it. It might feel like you are getting ready to pull the top of the tank off, but it does actually come out! Once you get that off, you'll be able to reach in from the top and get to the filter and pump assembly. Installation is the reverse. Things to be careful of... The green o-ring. I used a little petroleum jelly and worked it back in. Just be careful to not stretch or rip the o-ring. Also a bit of a PITA to put back in is the black rubber trim ring that you can see when the thing is all together. All in all it's not a hard job. You just have to take your time and not damage the 0-ring. It may even be a good idea to have on on hand before you start.

Oh... I just noticed your signature! Yes, the Hawaiians do like their spam and rice masubi (SP)!!!! There was a Wendy's near the Stadium on Oahu that sold the stuff along with Saimin... You sure don't see that on the Main Land!!!

Small tip:
Don't REMOVE the allen setscrews all the way, just back them out about 2-3mm... much easier when you go to reinstall everything that way...

I think i've seen pics of how to take off the cap. I didn't think it was hard looking at it, so it'll prob be my project this weekend.

redduck....I grew up out in Hawaii. I could prob throw 20 recipes out that have Spam as the main ingredient! Since I moved up here to WV, I've had to learn how to cook all the stuff I used to go to Zippys or a plate lunch stand to buy. I do gross quite a few people out with ingredients....heh heh

The easiest way I found to get the bezel off was to rip a 2' section of 1x4 so it just fits inside the filler opening. Stick the bottom of the board just past the bezel and lever it off. Doesn't take very much force at all - just pops out.
