Default Compression setting on rear shock???

So, I adjusted my preload today and was going to set the compression / rebound back to stock to start over on the trials. Well, I had the adjustments all the way out to set the spring preload and then turned them all the way in to begin the resetting process. The rebound was a recommended 8 clicks. No big deal. The comression was a recommended 25 clicks. Problem is, there are only 28 available???? Does this seem right? I put it at 17 I think, just to go close to mid way to start with. Any suggestions??

When I got my front suspension redone by Racetech, I didn't feel like getting a new rear setup as well at the time, so I tried, in vain, so get some more performance out of the rear for the time being. I remember setting it one or two steps from the end, and it still sucked. But don't be surprised that it needs 25/28 to be set right.

I wouldn't really say mine sucks, but then I haven't really rung it out on some good roads yet. I haven't (nor do I think I ever will) pushed the extremes of this bike or any bike for that matter. Three cliks away from full soft just seems a bit much for what little I know. Thanks for the input though.

If the rear isn't ever bottoming or isn't squatting excessively when you accelerate (reasons for more compression damping), then you don't need as much. I ran my stock shock at 0 compression (lightened 1997 900 SS, and I weigh 150 lbs.) and it still had too much. They all seem too harsh stock (a Penske cured all that). If you have the correct springs, you shouldn't need much compression damping.

For around town riding you should be fine. I don't very hard on the street and so I don't notice that much of a difference day to day. But on the track, my Showa rear shock wasn't the best performer. I think it just had to do with it being old and worn out. When I went back to school, I stopped having enough time for track days and such, and so never have gotten around to getting a new shock, it's just not a priority right now. Joe B has a point though, if you're not riding hard on the street you may not need a ton of compression dampening.

Same here...1997 900ss/sp, 150 lb rider, 0 compression, and still harsh. Penske, huh?...

Yes, Penske for sure. I bought the one Chris Kelley sells for the SS with the piggyback reservoir (instead of remote). What a difference! The Supersport is plagued with a harsh rear end due to the lack of shock linkage anyway. The Penske really smoothed it out (so much so that I went with the SBK fork conversion so the front would work as well as the rear!).
