Does anyone know what models have rims that are interchangable with an '03 1000 SS? Here's something I clipped from somewhere:
99-02 had 25mm hollow front with 17mm solid rear
1000ds have 25mm hollow front as well as 25mm hollow rear
Mine appears to have a hollow rear, but I can't tell how big it is, and I don't have a rear stand yet so haven't taken off the wheel to actually measure it, although it looks smaller than the front.
Specifically, does anyone know if an '01 ST4 rear will fit?

You should be able to tell if it is hollow or not without a rear stand. Also, you should be able to measure it without taking the wheel off. Take the nut off one side and measure it. I dunno about the ST4.
An st4 rim will not fit. Even if you swap the bearings, the rims is about 1/4" too wide. The only rim that will work on a supersport (without a lot of work) is a supersport rim
Dr A, I read your post in another forum on this site and I am having a hard time putting 2 and 2 together. If you check the online wheel resellers, specifically Motowheels, they list fitment for my bike as follows:
"SS Monster to 01"
Wouldn't this suggest that the SS and Monster share the same rear wheel during this period? Doesn't the ST also share the Monster rear wheel as well during that time? Maybe you were trying a later wheel on an earlier bike or vice versa.
Not doubting you, but still holding on to the hope that there is a fairly easily souced OEM take-off that will work.

you don't need to remove the wheel to see if it's the same size as the front. i KNOW your front axle's a 25mm. to find out if your rear is also the same size, use a ruler, tape measure, dial caliper and measure the inner diameter of the front and rear axles. you don't have to be super-accurate. if the rear's a 20mm unit, there'll be a significant enough difference in I/D that you'll tell easily.
IF!!! your rear IS in fact a 25mm axle (same diameter in front), then you should be able to fit ST4S rims or monster S4 rims on. your 1000 should have a 5.5" wheel in back which is the same width as the ST4S and monster S4's.
Thanks guys. I guess it was fairly logical to take a look myself, but my bike's in the garage and it's probably about 15 degrees in there right now! Anyway, at first glance it was obvious that the front and rear were NOT the same size. I took a nut off the rear and measured it with a caliper and it is 17mm and hollow. So, it doesn't look like the st4 rim will fit, if it really uses a 25 mm axle.
You can set pretty much any wheel up for a different axle size by changing the bearings and spacers.
And yes, Monster and SS wheels are interchangeable depending on the year, I just threw a set of Marchesini's from a Monster on my '99 SS. Didn't have to change anything (but did put in new wheel bearings just in case!).
Well, I know this first hand. I bought a set of rims from a S4 to put on my 2002 SS and the hub was a 1/4" too wide. I tried swaping the bearing and a whole mess of other stuff to get that guy to fit. I finally popped the bearings out of my stock wheel and measured them through the axle. Sure enough they were of by a 1/4". Even the bearings were a different width.
I didnt know that the new 1000ds have the 25mm rear. I dont know if that changes anything or not.

My stock wheels/swingarm combo was a rectangular-section aluminum swingarm w/ 3-spoke wheels. I've now upgraded to the newer/lighter alloy swingarm and mag 5-spokes. Both setups use the 17mm rear axle. I think the 17mm axle was used until 2002 or something like that, then they switched to the 25mm type.
Mine is an '03 1000 SS with the aluminum swingarm (I presume) and it's got a 17 mm axle. Not sure if they changed it for '04, but my '03 has a hollow 17 mm axle.
I just won a rear rim off a '99 900 SS today on ebay, so when I get it I'll let you all know if it fits.
Well, I guess my theory is completely out the window.
So there seem to be all kinds of frikkin' combinations, but I'm losing track of what's what.
I bought a set of wheels from Strati (they came off your S4, right?) that I was going to use on Jessica's new SS800 (which is the same as the '03 800 Sport). But these 5-spokes have 25mm holes, and the hub is wider than her stock 3-spokers.
But even if the wheels were narrow enough, it's more than simply changing to a larger bearing. you would have to enlarge the holes in the swingarm itself, the chain-adjuster sliders, the rear caliper bracket, and buy a new axle and spacer.
It's just not an option.
So basically, I'm going to be selling these wheels, but there's no way I can tell people what bikes they'll fit. All I can do is give them the specs and they take their chances.
I've offered them to one guy, so I'm giving him first refusal. But if he declines the offer, I'll list them here first...
